이 논문은 단편 영웅소설 완판본 38장본 <용문전>의 주인공, 용문의 영웅 형상과 그 소설사적 의미를 살펴보는 것을 목표로 삼고 있다. <용문전>의 주인공은 용문이다. 용문의 형상과 행위에 초점을 두어 용문의 영웅성을 살펴본 결과 영웅성은 세 측면으로 귀결된다. 그는 언표적 영웅이고, 지략적 영웅이며, 인화적 영웅의 모습을 보였다. 우선, 용문은 연화도사, 천관도사, 영보산 청용사 노승, 오달유 등 작품에 등장하는 인물 모두에게 영웅으로 칭송된다. ‘용문은 영웅이다’라는 말이 반복적으로 언급되어 강조되고, 타인에게 전이된다. 따라서 용문을 언표적 영웅이라 할 수 있다. 둘째, 용문은 어려서부터 오행진법을 다루고 황석공의 병법을 운용하는 데 재능이 있었으며, 천문과 지리를 읽힘으로써 지세와 형세에 밝은 전략전술가로서 지략적 영웅성을 발휘하고 있다. 셋째, 용문은 화합할 수 없는 호왕과 한때 인연이 있었으나, 그를 떠날 때 예의를 다하였고, 포섭할 수 없을 것만 같았던 인물들을 놓아줌으로써 포용의 미덕을 보이고 있다. 때문에 그를 포용력에 기반한 인화적 영웅이라 할 수 있다. 용문의 이러한 영웅 형상을 토대로 용문전의 소설사적인 위치를 파악할 수 있다. 첫째, 가문소설 유형과 역사소설 유형이 융합된 작품들에서 주로 논의되었던 ‘충신불사이군’의 문제가 단편의 영웅소설의 중심 화제로 대두되었고, 그러한 문제를 내면화한 인물이 영웅성을 지닌 인물로 형상화 되었다는 데 의미가 있다. 즉, 반역과 귀순이라는 길항의 문제를 내면화한 영웅이 출현했다는 점이다. 둘째는 주로 단편의 영웅소설에서는 무력적이고 전쟁 영웅들이 빈번하게 등장하고, 복수의 영웅 인물들이 등장하는 장편의 영웅소설들에서는 지략적이고 인화적 영웅 형상을 가진 인물들이 등장했었는데, <용문전>과 같은 단편의 영웅소설에서 무력적이고 전쟁 영웅 대신, 지략적이며 인화적인 영웅이 형상화되었다는 점에서 소설사적 의미가 있다.

This study is based on the short story of the late Choson hero novel, <Yong moon cheon>. In this article, we analyze how heroism is expressed and studied the meaning of heroism. First, The hero of the main character Yongmoon was analyzed. Yongmoon, he is considered a hero by the words of others. Hero highlighted by people's words; he is a hero who focuses on planning a strategy; he is a hero who harmonizes with people. Yongmoon was not usually a war hero emerging from a short story hero novel. It is analyzed the meaning of the heroic figure of the unique yongmoon in the novel. In the long story novel, the heroic character focused on strategy was female. In a novel in which many male heroes appear, one of the male heroes has a strategic heroism. Heroes could come out because of the diversity of heroism as multiple heroes appeared. In other words, it is meaningless that <Yong moon cheon> is a work which does not depict only the heroes in the war in the short story of the late Choseon novel. First, Human beings have emerged that internalize rebellion and devotion. Second, Only the hero who wrote the script was featured in the novel. However, this hero also appeared in short stories. This is the meaning and value of <Yong moon cheon>.
