이 글은 문명 전환의 기류 한가운데에서 대학의 교양교육이 가야할 길을 탐색한다. 근래에 들어 산업화, 세계화, 정보화에 이은 ‘4차 산업혁명’이라 일컫는 첨단과학기술의급진적 변화가 가져올 문명사적 전환에 대한 관심과 우려가 깊어지고 있다. 이와 같은 문명 전환의 국면에서 대학교육의 목표와 그내용 및 방법 등, 교육 전반에 걸쳐서도 큰변화가 예상되고 있다. 특히 최근의 교양교육 관련 연구들은 대학이 기존의 교양교육프레임을 가지고서는 4차 산업혁명 시대를 열어갈 수 없는 지점에 이르렀다고 진단한다. 4차 산업혁명의 의미와 그 전개 방향을 검토하고 그에 따른 대학교육의 변화와 교양교육의 과제에 대해 다각적으로 논의하는 과정에서 공통적으로 거론되는 것이, 기술혁신이 가져올 가장 근본적 문제인 인간 존재와 인간성 자체에 대한 도전이다. 이에 지혜롭게 대응하기 위해서는 인간의 고유한 영역을 어떻게 이해하고, 또 그것을 어떻게 지켜낼것인지에 대해 생각해보는 일이 선행되어야 한다. 전례 없는 기술의 힘이 가져다줄 변화와 혁신의 소용돌이 한복판에서 돌파구를 찾아 나가자면 인간적인 판단과 선택의 가능성에 기댈 수밖에 없다. 이를 위해서는 인간에 대한 폭넓은 이해를 기반으로 인간다운 삶을영위하기 위해 반드시 추구해야 할 의미, 가치, 목적에 천착하는 교양교육이 필수적이다.
This paper aims to explore the way that liberal arts education at universities should go in the midst of the transition of civilization. Recently, there is growing interest and concern about the transition of civilizational history that will be brought about by the radical changes in the advanced technology called '4th industrial revolution' following industrialization, globalization, and informatization. In such a transitional phase of civilization, major changes are also expected throughout the education, including the goals and contents and methods of university education. In particular, recent studies on liberal arts education suggest that universities have reached a point where it is impossible to open the era of 4th industrial revolution with the existing frame of liberal education. In the course of reviewing the meaning of 4th industrial revolution and its development direction, and also discussing the changes in the university education and the issues of liberal arts education, a common theme is a challenge to the human existence and humanity itself, the most fundamental issue that technological innovation will bring. In order to respond wisely to the issue, it should be preceded to think about how to understand and how to protect the human realm. If we are to seek a breakthrough in the middle of the vortex of change and innovation that the unprecedented power of technology will bring, we must rely on the possibilities of human judgment and choice. For this, it is necessary to have a liberal arts education to explore meanings, values, and aims one has to pursue in order to lead a decent life based on a broad understanding of human beings.
