이 글은 미셸 푸코와 루이 알튀세르의 이론적 차이점을 마르크스를 매개로 하여 살펴보고자 한다. 푸코와 알튀세르는 인간적ㆍ제도적ㆍ사상적으로 매우 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있었으나, 두 사람은 서로에 대해 거의 아무런 언급을 남기지 않았다. 그런데 최근 출간된 푸코의 초기 콜레주 드 프랑스 강의록은 1970년대 푸코의 권력의 계보학이 알튀세르의 마르크스주의, 특히 그의 이데올로기론에 대한 비판적 대안으로 구상되었음을 잘 보여준다. 이 강의록에 입각하여 두 사람의 이론을 살펴보면, 푸코는 알튀세르의 이데올로기 이론이 국가장치를 중심으로 삼기 때문에 권력의 미시적 작동 방식을 제대로 해명해주지 못하고 있으며, 더 나아가 자본주의가 성립하기 위한 논리적ㆍ물질적 조건도 제대로 해명해주지 못한다는 비판을 제기했음을 알 수 있다. 또한 푸코는 알튀세르를 포함한 마르크스주의자들이 비정상적 인간들을 예속화하는 권력의 작용에 무관심하다는 비판을 제기했다. 하지만 알튀세르의 관점에서 보면 푸코는 이데올로기 개념을 알튀세르 이전의 관점에서 이해하고 있으며, 이에 따라 이데올로기의 상상적 차원(스피노자적인 의미에서)의 중요성을 간과하고 있다. 더 나아가 지배계급과 피지배계급의 권력의 비대칭성은 미시권력만으로는 해명되지 않는다는 점을 놓치고 있다는 점도 문제로 지적될 수 있다. 그런데 이러한 비판적 토론에는 몇 가지 잔여가 여전히 남게 될 것이다.
This article examines the theoretical differences between Michel Foucault and Louis Althusser using Marx as a mediation. Foucault and Althusser had very close personal, institutional, and ideological relations, but they left little reference to each other. A recent publication of Foucault’s early Collège de France lectures, however, suggests that Foucault's genealogy of power in the 1970s should be considered as a critical alternative to Althusser's Marxism, especially his theory of ideology. If we look at their relationship on the basis of these lectures, we realize that Foucault criticizes Althusser on two points: first, because Althusser’s theory centers on state apparatus, it doesn't really explain the micro-actions of powers; second, moreover, it does not explain the logical and material conditions under which capitalism is to be established. Foucault also criticized the Marxist - including Althusser - for being uninterested in the role of power to subject abnormal human beings. However, from the Althusser's point of view, Foucault has limitations on two points: first, Foucault understands ideology from the pre-Althusserian perspective, and ignores the importance of the imaginary (in the Spinozan sense) in ideology; second, Foucault misses that the asymmetry in the power of the ruling and lower classes cannot be explained by micro-powers alone. There will be, however, some remnants in this critical exchange.
