한국 최초 팩추얼드라마를 표방한 <임진왜란 1592>는 2016년 9월 5부작으로 방영되었다. 본 연구에서는 팩추얼드라마 <임진왜란 1592>의 분석을 통해서 팩추얼드라마의 형식이 역사 다큐멘터리와 드라마와 달리 어떠한 역사 해석의 전망을 보이고 있는지 주목하였다. 팩추얼드라마는 픽션을 최대한 배제한 채 역사적 팩트를 나열하여 이야기를 구성한 드라마이다. 다시 말해, 팩추얼드라마는 다큐멘터리와 드라마의 속성이 동시에 내재해 있는, 사실성이 뒷받침 된 이야기를 통해 대중과 역사적 사회적 진실을 공유하는 형식이라고 정의할 수 있다. 팩추얼드라마 <임진왜란 1592>는 역사드라마에서 팩트와 픽션의 길항 관계가 역사해석을 위한 상호 보완의 관계로 기능할 수 있다는 가능성을 보인 작품이라고 평가할 수 있다. <임진왜란 1592>의 제작자들은 팩추얼드라마라는 장르를 통해 전달하고 있는 재현이 허구가 아니며 역사적 사실과 사실을 바탕으로 추리된 구성물이라는 점을 분명히 하였다. 그리고 사실성이 바탕이 된 극화된 내러티브를 통해 시청자들로 하여금 역사를 감각적으로 경험하게 하고 상호 해석의 태도를 촉구함으로써 역사 담론을 풍부하게 하였다. 이는 팩추얼드라마가 기록된 역사와 시각적 자료를 통합한 내러티브로서 대중의 역사이해의 새로운 방식으로 기능할 수 있는 한 가능성을 보여준 것이라 할 수 있다.
The <Imjin War 1592>, which portrayed Korea’s first factual drama, was broadcast in September of 2016 with 5 episodes. This study examined what kind of historical interpretation the formation of factual drama shows in comparison with historical documentary and drama by analyzing the factual drama <Imjin War 1592>. Factual drama compiles stories by weaving the historical facts and excluding fiction as much as possible. Therefore, a factual drama can be defined as a form sharing the historical and social truth with public through factually supported story, in which the attributes of documentary and drama coexist. The factual drama <Imjin War 1592> can be regarded as a work that showing the possibility that the antagonistic relation of fact and fiction can function as a complementary relationship for historical interpretation in historical dramas. The producers of <Imjin Waer 1592> made it clear that the transmitting representation through the genre of factual dramas is not a fiction, but a reasoned work based on historical facts. Moreover, through dramatic narratives based on reality, viewers were able to experience history in a sensible way and to encourage the attitude of mutual interpretation, thereby enriching the discussion of history. This implies the possibility of factual drama can function as a narrative that combines the historical and visual data and a new way of understanding history.
