The Characteristics and Meanings of Spaces in Yi Byeung-gi’s 「On the Road to Jeju Island」

시조작가이자 문화민족주의자인 이병기(李秉岐, 1891～1968)는 박한영(朴漢永, 1870～1948), 권덕규(權悳奎, 1890～1950)와 더불어 1924년 7월 31일부터 8월 12일까지 제주에 다녀왔다. 이병기는 이때의 체험을 재현한 시조 「濟州ㅅ길에」를 지어 1924년 8월 25일자 『동아일보(東亞日報)』에 발표했다. 「濟州ㅅ길에」를 개괄적으로 검토하고 「濟州ㅅ길에」에 재현된 공간의 양상과 의미를 고구하는 이 글의 요지는, 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있다. 이병기 일행의 제주 기행은 1920년대 문화운동의 일환이며, 목적지는 민족의 성지 중 하나인 한라산이다. 「濟州ㅅ길에」는 이병기의 제주 기행 체험을 투영한 『가람日記』 삽입시조를 초고로 하여 9개 부제 아래 20수로 완정되어 있으므로, 그 갈래를 내용상 기행시조, 형식상 연작시조로 분류할 수 있다. 「濟州ㅅ길에」의 내용은 이병기의 제주 기행 체험을 시간순으로 재현하고, 이병기가 체득한 영산강 유역-제주의 인문지리 정보를 소개하는 것으로 구성되어 있다. 「濟州ㅅ길에」는 이병기가 현재의 관점에서 관찰한 조선의 자연 공간, 역사적 공간, 신성 공간 및 조선인의 일상 공간을 담고 있다. 이 공간들은 과거와 현재를 관통하며, 영산강 유역-제주를 중심으로 지리적 상상력에 의해 재구성된, 새로운 조선의 국토의 표상을 독자적으로 형성하고 있다. 이로써 이병기는 자신과 독자들이 새로운 조선의 국토의 표상을 통해 조선인으로서 자아를 재발견하고, 조선인의 민족 정체성을 확립하고자 했을 것이다.

Yi Byeung-gi(李秉岐) traveled to Jeju Island with Park Han-yeung(朴漢永) and Gwon Deok-gyu(權悳奎) from 31 July to 12 August 1924. He composed 「On the Road to Jeju」 on the experiences for part of the travel and published in 『Donga Ilbo(東亞日報)』 on 25 August 1924. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the characteristics and meanings of spaces in 「On the Road to Jeju Island」. This paper can be summarized as follows. The purpose of their travel was as a cultural movement during the 1920s. The travel destination was Mt. Halla, sacred mountain on Jeju Island. Comparing 「On the Road to Jeju Island」 with insertion Sijo works in 『Garam's Diary(가람日記)』, this paper has been estimated that a first draft of 「On the Road to Jeju Island」 is insertion Sijo works. 「On the Road to Jeju Island」 consisted of 20 Sijo works below 9 subtitles. Accordingly, the genre of 「On the Road to Jeju Island」 is Travel Sijo and Series Sijo. The contents of 「On the Road to Jeju Island」 have represented experiences of his travel and Human Geographic Information of Yeungsan River-Jeju Island district. The characteristics of spaces in 「On the Road to Jeju Island」 are analyzed natural space, historic space, sacred space in Korea and Korean living space. The meanings of spaces in 「On the Road to Jeju Island」 are represented image geographies of Yeungsan River-Jeju Island district. The image geographies of 「On the Road to Jeju Island」 let Korean share and discover national identity.
