The Compilation of the ‘Standard History of Our Dynasty’(本朝正史) and the ‘Problem of the Jianwen Reign’ in Late Ming China

만력 20년대 전반에 있었던 ‘본조정사’ 편찬 사업은 명조가 편찬한 본조사(명대사)에 대한 대상 시기와 관련 범위가 가장 넓은 편찬사업이었다. 이 논문은 이러한 본조정사 편찬 사업과 명 중후기에 등장해 있었던 ‘건문조 문제’와의 관계를 고찰하고자 하는 것이다. 기존 연구에서도 그 관계가 논의되기는 했으나 사실 중시의 사례라든가 건문 연호 회복의 성과라는 비교적 제한적인 의미부여에 머무른 감이 있다. 이 논문에서는 조금 다른 차원에서 건문조 문제가 본조정사(기전체 본조사) 편찬의 추진에 미친 근본적인 영향관계에 중점을 두고자 하였다. 이를 위해 만력 20년대 전반의 직접적인 편찬사업에 한정하지 않고 그 이전 시기와 편찬 중단 이후 시기까지 명 후기 전체를 시야에 넣어 검토하고자 하였다. 건문조 문제는 기전체 본조사를 편찬해야 하는 주요한 이유로 제시되고 있었으므로 편찬을 제기하는 요소로 작용하고 있었던 것은 명확하다. 동시에 건문조 문제는 정권측에서 회피하려고 하는 것인데 기전체 본조사 편찬은 건문조 문제와 연결되지 않을 수 없었으므로 편찬을 저해하는 요소로도 작용하고 있었을 가능성이 있다. 만력 20년대 전반의 본조정사 편찬 사업에서 건문연호가 회복되었고 또 건문제 본기가 제기되었다는 것은 건문조 문제의 측면에서 중요한 사항이라고 하겠다. 그러나 명의 기전체 본조사 편찬사업 그 자체의 측면에서는 건문조 문제가 편찬 사업 추진에 미친 모순적인 양면적 영향에서 더 근본적인 의미를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.

The compilation project of the ‘Standard History of Our Dynasty’(composite style history concerning the contemporary dynasty) in the mid 1590s was the largest project concerning the span and the scope of the subject among the compilation projects of the Ming Dynasty. The aim of this article is to discuss the relations between this project and the problem of the Jianwen reign. These relations were discussed in the restricted forms as the example of the emphasis on the fact or achievement of the rehabilitation of the Jianwen reign title in precedent studies. But in this article, I focused from the different dimension the fundamental influences that the ‘Problem of the Jianwen Reign’ exerted on the compilation project. The ‘problem of the Jianwen reign’ was presented as the reason to raise the necessity of the compilation project. Therefore it is obvious that it worked as the factor to raise the compilation project. At the same time, it seems that it worked as the factor to hinder the compilation project, because the regime wanted to evade the rising of the ‘problem of the Jianwen reign.’ As for the The ‘Problem of the Jianwen Reign,’ it could be said that the rehabilitation of the reign title was important. But as for the whole compilation project, it seems that the contradictory influences that it exerted on the project as both raising and hindering forces had more fundamental meaning.
