본고는 1939년 조선문학에 내재된 미래적 전망의 지형도 복원에 의의를 가진다. 1939년 ≪동아일보≫에서 기획한 신년문인좌담회 「新建할 朝鮮文學의 性格」은 당대 조선문학의 현재와 미래를 두고 논의되었던 당대적 육성이 살아 숨 쉬는 주요한 사료이다. “新建”이라는 불가능한 목표 설정을 통해 조선문학의 비전을 고찰했다는 데에 의미가 있다. 특히 김상용, 김광섭 등 해외문학 논자들이 좌담을 주도하면서, 조선문학의 세계화의 문제를 주요 명제로 삼았던 점이 주목된다. 당면한 현실의 패배적 현상을 진단하기보다 전망의 재생산을 통해 조선문학의 미래를 가시화한 것이다. 임화가 좌담 내내 서구 고전을 옹호하는 입장이나 김남천이 세태소설을 통해 현실을 개진해나가려는 입장 등은 종래의 호전적인 비평 태도와는 일정 수준 절충된 입장이다. 이는 1930년대 말 리얼리즘론의 실패 이후 또 다른 모색을 기획하려했던 리얼리즘 논자들의 열정이라 할 수 있겠다. 일제의 대동아공영권 전략이 가속화되고 있는 가운데, 조선문학의 세계화, 고전옹호, 세태소설론, 농민문학론 등 조선문학이 처한 당대의 논제를 규명함에 있어 서로 다른 입장 차이를 보여줌으로써 향후 조선문학이 나가갈 미래의 의미를 고찰한 것이다.
This paper has significance in restoring the topography of future prospects embedded in Joseon(Korean) Literature in 1939. 「Character of Joseon(Korean) Literature to be newly established」, a New Year's literary symposium that was planned ≪Dong-A Ilbo≫ in 1939, is a vivid record of writers discussing the present and future of Joseon literature. That record has significance in discussing the vision of Joseon(Korean) Literature by setting impossible goal “building a new literature”. It is worthy of notice that while authors of Kim Sang-yong, Kim Kwang-sup, etc. Haewoimunhakpa(The School of Foreign Literature) have led the symposium, made the problem of the Joseon(Korean) literary globalization as a major proposition. Rather than diagnosing the defeat phenomenon of reality, it visualized the future of Joseon(Korean) literature through the reproduction of prospect. It was a bit of compromise position in comparison with their aggressive criticism: Lim-hwa advocates The Great Books of western during the symposium and Kim Nam-cheon's position to change reality through the kinds of Novel of Manners etc.. This is the passion of realist writers who tried to find new ways after Realism in the late 1930s failed. Amid the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere strategy of Japan was accelerating, they showed different and variety viewpoints such as Globalization of Korean Literature, Western Classic Advocacy, Novel of Manners and Peasant Literature in identifying contemporary issues of Joseon(Korean) literature. It has identified the contemporary issues facing the Joseon(Korean) literature by showing the difference of different positions, the future direction of Joseon(Korean) literature will be examined.
