『역』의 가장 기본적인 물음이며 주제는 길․흉이다. 이는 행․불행, 득․실, 선․악, 또는 기운과 세력의 소장(消長)으로도 풀이된다. 이처럼 길․흉은 여러 대체 개념이 있다. 64괘 384효는 이 길․흉, 실․득을 인사로써 제시한다. 무엇을 이루며 실패하는가의 문제는 사람에 따라 다르겠지만 포괄적으로는 각자의 뜻[志]이라고 할 수 있다. 세상 사람들의 뜻을 이루어주기 위해서 『역』을 만들었다는 「계사전」의 언급이 있다. 길흉은 인간의 한계 밖의 영역에 있어 이를 주어진 것[所値]으로서 그저 순응하여 편안히 여길 수밖에 없는 것도 있고, 자기 의지와 행위의 결과, 곧 수길(修吉) 패흉(悖凶)의 스스로 지은[自作] 것이기에 자기의 선한 지혜를 최대한 발휘하는 것이 있다. 그런가 하면 천지의 조화(造化)에 능동적으로 참여하여 돕고 스스로의 행위가 만물의 골간이 되고 대상의 길흉이 되어 부리는[所使] 차원의 길흉도 있다. 앞의 두 경우가 수용과 순응의 길흉이라면, 뒤의 부리는 길흉은 창조적 길흉이라 할 수 있다. 이것은 지극한 경지도 있지만 필부필부의 범인들 사이에서 빚어지는 일상사에서도 나타난다. 즉 그 성취에 고저(高低)가 있고 영향에 광협(廣狹)이 있다. 『역』을 배우는 사람들은 단순한 취길피흉(就吉避凶)이 아니라 안완(安玩), 수패(修悖)를 넘어 조화(造化)와 참찬(參贊)의 경지까지 나아가야 할 것이다.
The popular and basic concern in the Book of Changes is the phrase “good or misfortune”. It contains the concept of win or lose, and the results of good and evil behaviors. Sometimes it could be understood as construction/ destruction, creation/extinction, retreat or the rising of power and strength. Like this, good or bad fortune could be substituted for other words. Among them, win and lose is the most used one. The hexagram and its six lines give us this win-lose sign as advice for behaviour. What could we win or lose? It is an important problem which people encounter in their lives. I think that it could vary according to their life-goals. There are three kinds of good fortune and misfortune in the Book of Changes. First is the one called fortune-given, which will be met through life. In this case, we should accept it with the mind of adaptation. Second is the one called fortune-self made which could come from our moral or immoral behaviors. In this case, if we make efforts to meet the moral laws, we should recieve good fortune. The last is the one called fortune-making, which the sage could impart to the people as a logic of his life. We could call this as a creative fortune. It is very difficult for us to reach such a high level of a sage, but it begins from our daily life here and now, so that we cannot forgive the efforts to seek the path to that stage of dimension.
