이글은 「한림별곡」의 창작시기와 성격 및 작자 등에 대하여 논의하였다. 창작시기에 대해서는 『고려사』 「악지」 ‘속악조’와 가사가 실린 『악장가사』에 고종 때 한림제유들에 의해 지어졌다는 기록에 따라 고종연간이나 고종 2년에서 17년 사이에 지어졌을 것이라는 견해와 고종대가 아닌 그 이후에 창작되었을 것이라는 견해 등이 있다. 필자는 이와 달리 고종 32년(1245) 5월 최이 사제에서 열린 연회를 비롯한 최이 집권기의 여러 기록 등을 통해 「한림별곡」의 창작시기를 추정하고자 하였다. 고종 32년 5월 연회의 기사에 근거하여 「한림별곡」의 창작시기를 추정하고, 노래가 창작되는 데 기반이 되었던 것으로 보이는 팔방상과 팔경시의 양식적 수용, 조흥구나 여음으로 볼 수 있는 ‘위’자의 사용 등도 논의하였다. 강화천도시기에 최이는 자신의 사제에 왕을 비롯한 고위 문무관료 및 일반 장군들까지 초청하여 연회를 베풀었는데, 이는 자신의 권력을 유지하기 위한 방안으로서 몽골에 대한 항거의지를 굳건히 하고자 함이었다. 그 과정에서 새로운 시가 양식인 「한림별곡」을 창작하여 연회의 흥취를 고양함과 동시에 자신의 메시지를 전달하고자 하였다.
This paper discussed the writing time, characters, and author of 「Hallimbyeolgok (翰林別曲)」. As for the time of writing, based on the record in ‘History of Goryeo’, ‘Akji’ (Music book), ‘Sogakjo’ (Chapter), and ‘Akjang-gasa’ (Collection of songs), in addition to the lyrics of ‘Sogakjo’ written by Confucian scholars during King Gojong, there is a view that it might have been written during King Gojong or in between the second to seventeenth year of King Gojong. Another view is that it might have been written after King Gojong’s time. This paper, however, attempted to estimate the writing time of 「Hallimbyeolgok」 based on various records of the banquet held in Choi Yi's private residence in May during the 32th year of King Gojong (1245), and records at the time of the rule of Choi Yi. This paper further estimated the writing time of 「Hallimbyeolgok」 in the article of the banquet held in May during the 32th year of King Gojong while discussing the usage of the letter ‘wi’ that seems to be the basis for the song creation in Palbangsang and can be seen as stylistic acceptance, phrase adding to the fun and lingering sound in Palgyeongsi. During the time of the capital transfer to Ganghwa, Choi Yi invited high-ranking civils, military officials and common generals, including the King, to his private residence and hosted a banquet. This was in order to solidify his will to protest against Mongolia and also a measure to maintain power. In the process, Choi Yi created a new poetry style, 「Hallimbyeolgok」, while simultaneously boosting the excitement of the banquet and conveying his own message.
