오늘 우리 시대 삶과 교육을 성찰하는 노력의 일환으로 기독교 영성에 기반한 아미쉬(Amish) 공동체를 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 듀이와 팔머를 참조할 것이다. 이들을 읽음과 함께, 이들에게 읽혀지는 오늘 우리 삶과 교육은 어떤지 봄에 이 글의 목적이 있다. 기계문명이 변하는 속도에 적응해 사는 삶과 이 삶을 위한 교육이 당연하다고 여기는 우리에 반해, 아미쉬는 사회가 기계를 취사선택해야 함과 할 수 있음을 말한다. 변화에 적응해 사는것도 힘겨운 일이지만 변화의 물결에 맞서 자기로 존재함 또한 고투와 용기를 필요로 함을 아미쉬는 말한다. 아미쉬는 16세기 종교 개혁기에 유아 침례(세례)를 거부하고 다시 침례를 받았다고 해서 재침례교도(Anabaptists) 라 불리는 이들의 후예 중 한 종파다. 자신의 선조들이 믿음에 따른 앎에 이끌려 삶으로, 결과적으로 당시 사회의 부정의와 부패를 드러내 박해를 받았다면, 이들 또한 저항할 것에 저항함으로 자신이 누구인지 잃지 않고 여전히 아미쉬로 살고 있다. 시대에 편승하든, 신앙에 이끌리든 간에 지극한 노력을 요구하는 게 삶일진대, 다음세대에게 미안하지 않는 삶을 사는 것이 인간다운 것이기에 가치 있지 않느냐는 반문을 아미쉬는 존재 그 자체(being itself)로 불러일으킨다. 공동체를 말하지만, 정작 공동체로 산 경험이 없기에 공동체를 알지 못하는 우리에게, 아미쉬는 삶 그 자체를 소중히 여김이 어떤 것인지 삶으로 말한다. 삶이 소중한 만큼, 교육이 중요하기에부모와 사회가 책임져왔음을 보게 된다. 교육은 하나의 사회로서 자신들의 삶을 대물림하고자 하는 노력의 일환으로 존재하는 것이지, 이 사회로서 공동체와 상관없는 지식 전수로 삶을 왜곡할 수 없음을 말한다. 공동체와 교육을 위한 출발이 부모로부터 다음세대에게 전수된다. 이는 그들 선조들이 재침례를 받음으로 삶을 새롭게 했던역사와 같은 맥락에 있다. 마음을 새롭게 해 변화를 받아야 할 세대는 바로 지금 이 사회를 책임지고 있는 부모로서 어른인 우리임을 아미쉬를 통해 알게 된다. 부모가 자식의 교육을 책임짐은 결국 물려줄 만한 삶을 살아내는 것에서 비롯함이기에, 오늘 우리에게 필요한 것은 어떤 삶이 가치 있는 삶인지 묻고 살아낼 용기다.
The purpose of this study is to know our life and education as we are known by drawing upon the thoughts of Dewey, Palmer, and Amish community. Dewey and Palmer tell us that a community is very important as a place of life and education for children. But, they have different views about the community. This difference comes from their views on religion. Amish Community tells us that parents’ values and ways of life are very important for children's education, because children learn by living in a community as Dewey says. So, the quality and growth of children's experience counts on their parents' vibrant community. The history of Amish community began with Anabaptists that emerged as a radical, dissenting religious sect, during the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century. Anabaptists reject infant baptism in favor of an adult baptism. For them, baptism is not a stale religious tradition but the confession of their faith for representing their decision starting out new lives by and with Jesus. It is important to know that the history of Amish is a seeking of truth of Jesus and the Holy spirit. Amish have resisted anything and anyone hurting their mutual relation and values of life. The effort of Amish community is found in their education for the children and the community. What we can learn from Amish community is that parents' decisions are a turning point for the living education of children. In education, parents are not just responsible for the cost of children's education but they are decision makers of their children’s education. Above all, parents themselves should reflect on their lives and live accordingly. In addition, a place to discuss education together with parents needs to be nationally provided. History of today asks us to have courage to live up to the faith in the deep place of our heart.
