이 글에서 나는 일본의 식민지였던 남양군도의 얍 섬에 가서 활동했던 가족의 사례를 조사하여, 그들을 통해 당시 조선인들이 남양군도의 일본인 사회에 어떻게 적응하면서 살아갔는지를 설명하고자 하였다. 사례로 선택한 가족은 태평양 전쟁 기간에 강제 동원되었다가 고난을 겪었던 조선인들과 달리 취업 기회를 찾아서 스스로 남양군도로 가서 사업에 성공한 경우이다. 이 사례 연구는 인터뷰와 현지조사, 그리고 관련 문헌 조사를 대조하고 확인하는 작업을 통해, 얍에서 살았던 가족 구성원의 생활을 재구성하였다. 당시 남양군도에서는 야자열매, 또는 열매의 배아 부분을 말린 코프라를 생산하는 것이 수익이 좋은 산업이었다. 이 가족은 얍의 중심지 콜로니아에서 상점을 열어 놓고 야자열매 수집 상인으로 활동하였다. 부부가 서로 협력하게 되면서 부를 축적하는 속도가 빨라졌고, 나중에는 요릿집까지 개업하였다. 코프라 중매가 주로 원주민들을 상대로 하는 장사였다면, 요정은 일본인들, 그것도 지역 사회에서 정치적, 경제적 영향력을 갖고 있는 권력자들을 상대로 하는 장사였다. 그러므로 현지의 일본인 사회에 적극 협력하면서, 조선인의 아이덴티티를 강조하기보다는 오히려, 일본 이름인 통명(通名)을 사용하고, 일본인들이 즐겨 입는 옷을 입고, 일본인들 사이에서 사이좋게 지내는 데 힘을 쏟았다. 이들은 현지 주민들과 좋은 관계를 유지하면서 야자열매를 수집하는 사업을 했고, 한편 일본인 공동체에도 적응하면서 요릿집까지 개설하여 경제적으로 성공을 거두었다. 이 사례를 통해서 본 남양군도로의 이민은 조선인에게는 성공을 위한 길이었다.
In this paper, I want to show the history of a Korean family who lived in Yap island of the south sea islands during the Japanese colonial period. I will provide review of adaptive strategy of Koreans who were part of the Japanese community. There, they opened a store and did the work of collecting Copra from the locals. Copra is the white part inside a coconut and the part was used as base material of many products including cosmetics. At the time, Copra collection was a very profitable business. When the locals brought him coconuts, he would give them product from the shop as a return. A Japanese businessman who have made contract with him would then take the coconuts and deal with them. In the late 1930s, they opened restaurant in Yap island and became a successful businessman who rubbed shoulders with Japanese. In 1940, he came back to Jeju island and escaped the pacific war. Different from other Koreans who went into forced mobilization after the outbreak of Pacific war, this case was one that was successful through business after migrating to the south sea islands. In order for Korean to succeed at the time, they had to receive recognition from Japanese society living in the region and had to get into their network. At the same time, they needed to establish solid relationship with the locals. The Korean immigration to the South See Islands was the gateway to success for the for the colonists.
