본고의 目的은 우리나라 人物들이 등장하는 시조를 어떻게 이해해야 하는지 살펴보려는 데 있다. 現傳하는 시조는 5,000여 편 중 우리나라 인물들이 등장하는 작품은 119수이다. 119수에 등장하는 인물은 104인데 이 중 79명은 누구인지 확인이 가능하며 나머지 25명은 확인하기가 어렵다. 119수 중 作家를 알 수 있는 작품이 99수이고 無名氏 작품이 20수이다. 작가를 알 수 있는 작품을 중심으로 볼 때 우리나라 인물이 등장하는 시조는 16世紀 中盤부터 등장했으며, 時調 創作의 한 경향이라고도 이해할 수 있다. 작가보다 前世代 인물들이 등장하는 시조는 그 人物을 中心으로 작품을 理解해야 한다. 인물의 行蹟과 이미지의 影響 아래 작품이 있기 때문이다. 작가와 同世代 인물들이 등장하는 작품은 작가의 인물의 關係를 중심으로 이해해야 한다. 작품이 작가의 삶이나 心境을 드러내는데 인물의 등장이 도움을 주기 때문이다. 無名氏 작품에서는 등장인물을 중심으로 이해해야 하는 작품과 삶의 모습이 중심이어서 등장인물에 영향을 덜 받는 작품이 모두 존재하고 있다.
This paper is aimed to examine how Korean characters of Sijo works are treated. In 5000 extant Sijo works, Korean characters appear in 103 works. 103 persons appear in the 103 works. In the case of 27 persons of them, we can grasp their achievements but can't identify who they are. In the case of 23 persons of them, we can identify only their statuses. In the 103 works, 83 authors have been known and the other 20 authors have not been known. In the case of works that we can recognize their authors, the works in which Korean characters appear emerged in the late 16th century. It can be under- stood as one trend of Sijo in the late Joseon period. In the case of characters' appearances who are previous generations compared with their authors, we should understand the Sijo works around the characters. The works unfold around the characters' achievements or images and thus they are some hints for understanding them. In the case of characters' appearances who are the same generations with their authors, we should understand the Sijo works around the authors' lives and hearts. In the works, the characters' achieve- ments or images are not important. The characters just play an ancillary role in order to show the authors' lives and hearts. In the case of anonymous authors' works, there are both works that should be understood around their characters and works that their characters play an ancillary role.
