이 글은 개인들의 서사를 모조리 흡수해버리는 거대서사(master narrative)로서 신자유주의의 문제점과 그 폐해를 살핀 것이다. 신자유주의는 특정한 경제적 원리만을 뜻하지 않는다. 그것은 사회 전체를 지배하는 강력한 서사로 작동하면서 미시적인 생활 감각이나 무의식까지 점령해 왔기 때문이다. 신자유주의 서사는 메리토크라시(meritocracy)라는 달콤한 표면 속에 지독한 자기계발이데올로기를 내장한 형태로 사람들의 마음을 강력하게 휘어잡았다. 이점에서 이 글은 오늘날의 청년들이 자기서사를 구축하기 위해 신자유주의 서사가 끊임없이 조장하는 완전성(또는 독립성)의 가상으로부터 벗어나야 함을 강조했다. 아울러 완전성의 가상에서 <의존성=수치>라는 도덕관념이 산출되는데, 이 관념에 머물러 있는 한 자기부정의 쳇바퀴에 빠져 자기서사의 구성은 불가능하다는 점을 설명했다. 한편 이 글은 자기서사 구성을 위해 ‘겪음’의 사태가 가능한 감성적 장(場, field)과 같은 것이 전제되어야 함을 주장했다. 특히 한국에서 겪음이라는 낱말은 수동성, 환대, 만남(마주침)이라는 중층적인 의미맥락을 갖는다. 이점에 착안해서 이 시대 청년들이 자기서사를 만들기 위해 ‘공감장(共感場, sympathetic field)’의 구성이 절실함을 밝혔다. 아울러 다소 추상적이고 관념론적임을 무릅쓰고 공감장 구성을 위해 브리콜뢰르(bricoleur)의 자세와 픽션(fiction)의 정신이 필요함을 제안했다.
This paper looks into the harm inflicted by neoliberalism from the viewpoint that neoliberalism is a master narrative that absorbs all individual narratives like a black hole. The neoliberalism narrative won people over with a fierce self-development ideology embedded under the surface of sugarcoated meritocracy. This paper emphasizes that, to establish their self-narrative, young people should effectively get away from the myth of completeness (or independence), which is constantly encouraged by the neoliberalism narrative. This myth of completeness produces a dominant moral notion “dependence=embarrassment,” and this paper explains that, as long as they continue to believe in this notion, young people will be stuck in the hamster wheel of self-denial and it will be impossible for them to establish their own self-narrative. Meanwhile, this paper emphasizes that some kind of emotional field(場), where young people can “experience,” should be provided first, before they establish their own self-narrative. In Korea, the word “experience” has a multi-layered meaning of “passivity,” “hospitality,” and “encounter (running into someone).” From this analysis, this paper demonstrates that it is urgently needed to establish a “sympathetic field(共感場)” for today’s young people to create their own self-narrative.
