태종은 조선시대 왕 가운데 유일하게 과거에 급제하여 관직생활을 한 후에 왕의 자리에 오르는 인물이다. 문생은 자신을 발탁해 준 좌주를 은혜로 모시고 동년들은 치열한 경쟁을 뚫고 함께 합격한 동류의식을 바탕으로 하여 빈번한 사적인 모임들을 통해 지속적으로 결속을 다져 나가던 당시의 정치문화에 본인도 그 일원으로서 동화되어 함께 참여 하였다. 과거에 함께 급제한 동년이 존재한다는 것은 다른 국왕에게서는 찾아볼 수 없는 태종만이 가지는 독특한 이력에서 비롯하는 것이며 이들과의 교유관계는 태종의 집권 이전이나 이후의 정치적 활동과 사적인 영역에 일정한 영향을 주었다. 조선이 건국된 이후 태종이 왕으로 즉위하면서 제도적인 차원의 좌주･문생제는 왕권강화와 관련하여 폐지되었으며 동년의 동류의식 역시 상하관계로 바뀌었다. 그러나 이전에 동년들과 함께 하면서 다져두었던 사적인 친밀감과 유대는 왕이 된 후에도 태종에게 여전히 유효한 것이었다. 또한 태종은 즉위 후에 적지 않은 동년들과 인척관계를 맺으면서 동년에 대한 신뢰를 보여주었다. 동년은 유교적 소양을 가진 관료이며 잠저시절부터 동류의식을 바탕으로 하여 유대관계가 형성된 태종의 사적인 인간관계망이었다. 왕권에 위협이 될 만한 정치적 집단으로 성장할 소지를 가지고 있지 않았기 때문에 재위 후 본인의 세력을 등용하고자 했던 태종의 의중에 적합한 인물들이었다. 문과 동년은 태종의 정치적인 영향력 확대와 집권을 계기로 하여 많이 등용되어 두각을 나타냈으며 특히 태종은 이들을 대간(臺諫)과 군직(軍職)에 많이 배치함으로써 공적으로는 왕권을 안정시키고 강화시킬 수 있는 정치･군사적인 역할을 부여하였고 사적으로는 그들에게 예우와 배려를 베풀었다. 동년은 인간 이방원, 나아가 국왕 태종을 이해하는데 빼놓을 수 없는 중요한 집단이라고 볼 수 있다.
King Taejong(太宗) was the only king in the history of Joseon(朝鮮) who passed the state exam and entered government service before ascending to the throne. Those who passed the state exam(Munsaengs) would serve the Jwaju(座主) who selected them to pay back the favor. The Tongnyen(同年) would strengthen their solidarity through frequent private gatherings based on the consciousness of kind to pass the exam together in the middle of fierce competition. King Taejong(太宗) himself participated in the political culture of those days and was assimilated into the group. As King Taejong ascended to the throne after the founding of Joseon(朝鮮), the Jwaju(座主) Munsaeng(門生) system as an institution was abolished to reinforce the royal authority. The consciousness of kind among the Tongnyen(同年) was replaced by a superior-subordinate relationship. The private intimacy and solidarity that King Taejong(太宗) consolidated with his Tongnyen(同年), however, continued to remain valid to him even as a king. After seizing power, King Taejong(太宗) appointed many of his Tongnyen(同年) in Mungwa(文科) to Daegan(臺諫) and military posts(軍職), thus granting them political and military roles to stabilize and reinforce his royal authority in the public domain and guaranteeing them his respectful treatment and consideration in the private domain. His Tongnyen(同年) in Mungwa(同年) made an important group essential to the understanding of Lee Bang-won(李芳遠) as a human being and further King Taejong(太宗).
