이 글은 미국 민간 원조 기구 아시아재단이 1950년대에 한국에서 벌였던 여러 문화 사업 중 아동 출판물의 지원 양상을 살펴보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 아시아재단은 1951년 자유아시아위원회(Committee for Free Asia; CFA)로 출범했다가 1954년 아시아재단으로 개명한 것이 지금까지 이어져오고 있다. 당시 아시아재단이 한국에서 펼쳤던 제반 사업에 관한 서류가 현재 스탠포드 대학교 후버 인스티튜션 아카이브에 보관되어 있으며, 이 서류 안에 아시아재단이 자유아시아위원회 시절에 한 번, 아시아재단으로 개명 후 다시 한 번 아동 출판물의 출간을 지원했던 기록이 남아있다. 이 두 차례의 원조에는 모두 아동문학가 윤석중이 깊이 연관되어 있었는데 이를 통해 아동문학가로서의 윤석중이 아니라 아동문화가로서의 윤석중의 면모를 새로이 조명해볼 수 있다는 점은 득의의 영역이라 할 수 있다. 한편 윤석중이 재단의 원조를 받던 이 시기는 아시아재단의 대한 원조 기간 중 초기에 해당되던 시점이다. 때문에 이 시기에 진행되었던 원조 사업은 여러 시행착오의 과정을 겪을 수밖에 없었으며 원조의 방침 또한 안정적으로 정착될 수 없었다. 이 같은 맥락에서 볼 때 자유아시아위원회/아시아재단의 윤석중에 대한 지원 사업은 자유아시아위원회에서 아시아재단으로 이행하면서 점차 변모해가는 재단의 변화 과정을 살펴볼 수 있는 하나의 지표가 될 수 있다.
The objective of this article was to investigate the publication aids for the children among various cultural projects in 1950s by Asia Foundation which was the civil supporting organization in the US. Asia Foundation had been established as the name of Committee for Free Asia (CFA) in 1951 and changed its name into Asia Foundation. At that time, the documents on the projects in Korea performed by Asia Foundation are stored in Hoover Institution Archives of Stanford University. There are one record of publication for children by CFA and one by Asia Foundation in these documents. These two aids were related with Yoonseokjung who was a writer for children’s books, which reflected that he could be highlighted not as a writer for children’s books but a culturist for children. On the other hand, this timing when Yoonseokjung received the aid from the foundation was the initial stage of aid period by Asia Foundation. Therefore, the aid projects at this time had to bare multiple trials and errors, and the policy for the aid was not settled stably. Considering this context, the aid projects on Yoonseokjung by CFA/Asia Foundation can be an index to review the progresses of changes in the foundation from CFA into Asia Foundation.
