이 글은 예술가와 비평가의 역할을 통해서 다원주의 시대의 바람직한 시민의 모델이 무엇인지를 분석하고 있다. 다원주의 사회에서 개인의 자율성과 차이는 그 자체로 존중되어야 할 최고의 가치이다. 하지만 차이와 다름에 대한 강조는 타자와의 협력과 연대를 추구하는 ‘시민됨’의 가치와 충돌하기도 한다. 다원주의 시대에 ‘시민됨’은 ‘차이의 연대’, 곧 차이를 바탕으로 한 연대의 실현이라는 이중의 과제를 안고 있다. 이 글은 예술이 다원주의 시대의 ‘시민됨’의 과제를 해결할 수 있는 대안이 될 수 있다고 주장한다. 예술과 ‘시민됨’의 관계를 분석하기 위해서, 한나 아렌트, 존 듀이, 그리고 게오르그 짐멜의 사상을 중심으로 살펴보고 있다. 먼저 예술가로서 시민은 기존의 획일적이고 고착화된 관습과 질서를 극복하고, 새로운 의미와 가치를 창출하는 존재이다. 예술가가 자신만의 독창적인 작품을 창조하듯이, 다원주의 시대의 시민도 자신의 개성과 독자성을 바탕으로 새로운 가치를 창출할 수 있어야 한다. 또한 다원주의 시대의 시민은 관객과 비평가로서의 역할도 수행해야 한다. 관객과 비평가가 예술 작품의 미적 특성을 판단하고 유지하는 것처럼, 관찰자로서의 시민들 또한 정치적 경험과 행위를 판단하고 기억하는 역할을 수행해야 한다는 것이다. 시민들이 예술가이자 비평가로서의 이러한 역할을 행할 때, 다원주의 시대의 과제인 ‘차이의 연대’라는 가치도 실현될 수 있을 것이다.
This article examines what a desirable citizen model is in the pluralistic era through the role of an artist and a critic. In a pluralistic society, individual autonomy and differences are the highest value to be respected in itself. However, the emphasis on differences may conflict with the value of ‘being citizen’ pursuing cooperation and solidarity with others. In the age of pluralism, citizen has the dual task of ‘solidarity of difference’, that is, realization of solidarity based on the difference. This article argues that art can be an alternative to solve the citizen’s task of pluralism age. In order to analyze the relationship between art and ‘being citizen’, I focus on the ideas of Hannah Arendt, John Dewey and Georg Simmel. First, as an artist, a citizen overcomes conventional, fixed customs and order, and creates new meaning and value. Just as artists create their own original works, citizens of the pluralism age must be able to create new values based on their individuality and identity. In addition, citizens of pluralism age should also play a role as audience and critic. Just as audiences and critics judge and maintain works of art from an aesthetic point of view, citizens as observers must also play a role in judging and remembering political experiences and behaviors. When citizens play this role as an artist and a critic, the value of 'the solidarity of difference' which is the task of citizenship can be realized.
