이 연구는 육군 내 여군의 양적․질적 성장에도 불구하고 그에 부합한 육군의 문화가 충분히 성숙하지 못하다는 문제의식에서 출발하였다. 특히 여군에 대해 당연시하며 갖고 있는 육군 내 저변의 관념이나 인식이 무엇인지 찾아 그것에 대해 근본적인 질문을 던지고자 하였다. 이에 따라 선행연구를 토대로 ‘군인은 남성 전사’이며 ‘군은 남성만의 공간’이라는 인식이 군 내에서 여전히 지배적이라고 확인하고, 이를 ‘군은 남성만의 공간인가?’라는 하나의 질문으로 요약하여 논의를 진행하였다. 위 질문은 본론에서 양성평등, 전쟁 개념 확장, 사회적 변화라는 3가지 측면에서 검토할 것인데, 이는 우리 군 내 여군에 대한 부정적 인식의 문제점들이 어떠한지 드러내는 부분이 될 것이다. 필자는 이 연구가 군 내 여군의 역할에 대한 올바른 이해를 깊게 하는 데에 디딤돌로 기여할 수 있기를 바란다. 이 연구는 남성 중심적 젠더 인식을 극복하고, “남성과 여성 모두를 위한 군”이라는 생각을 발전시키는 데에 도움을 준다는 점에서 중요하다고 본다.
This study is based on the premise that despite the improvement of the quality and quantity of life for women soldiers in the Army, its organizational culture had not yet matured to integrate them fully into the Army. As demonstrated in previous studies, many conflicts and problems about women soldiers stem from a long-standing perception and belief in the Army that the military is "men's business." Beginning by working through the previous studies, we will discuss the problematic approach to women soldiers which reflects negative images of women soldiers in masculine terms. In the following sections, we will demonstrate the extent to which the bias against women soldiers has been embedded in social and cultural environment of the Army. For this purpose, this study will take up the issue in three aspects, such as gender equality, expansion of war concept, and social change. We hope that our study may serve as a stepping stone for further research in this field which offers us an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the role of women soldiers at the philosophical level. This type of research is important not only because it allows us to overcome the gendered idea of masculine military, but also it helps to develop the idea that "the military is for both men and women."
