본 연구는 일찍이 일본에 서구 모더니즘을 소개하고 신심리주의(新心理主義)를 제창한 문학평론가이자 소설가, 번역가, 또한 시인인 이토 세이(伊藤整 1905~1969)의 다방면에 걸친 문학 활동 중 번역활동에 주목하였다. 이토 세이라는 번역자가 원전(Ulysses,1922)의 번역에 의해 경험하게 되는 문화번역과정은 소설가 이토 세이의 신심리주의 실험작이라는 재창조의 결과물(문화전이)로 완성된다. 이토 세이는 제임스 조이스의 『율리시즈』 번역을 통해 자신의 문학적 영토(홋카이도)를 새로운 시각으로 마주하게 되었으며, 『율리시즈』에 나타난 식민지 문화를 이토 세이 자신도 그의 소설 창작에서 발현시킨다. 원전을 번역하는 과정은 번역자의 세계관과 사회, 문화적 배경이 무의식적으로 반영되기 때문에 번역자의 문화이해능력은 매우 중요하다. 이는 이토 세이의 번역행위가 언어적 의미만을 전달하는 단순번역이 아니라 문화전이의 과정임을 증명하고 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 번역자 이토 세이의 언어능력과 원전(율리시즈)의 문화에 대한 탁월한 이해능력에 중점을 두면서 최근의 탈식민지연구에서 주목하는 호미바바의 문화번역이론을 대입하여, 『율리시즈』 번역과정에서 촉발되어 창작된 이토 세이 소설이 성공적인 문화전이의 사례임을 논하였다. 또한 다른 문화와의 충돌은 파괴가 아닌 융화와 재창조(re-creation)라는 번역의 본질적 의미를 실천한 이토 세이의 문학적 위상을 재정립하려하였다.
This study aims at investigating translation activity of Sei Ito (1905~1969), who translated and introduced European modernism theory to Japan in the early stage, among various literary activities, as a literary critic who insisted on neo-psychologism(新心理主義) as well as a novelist, translator, and poet. Cultural clash that went through Sei Ito's translation process of the original (Ulysses, 1922) was completed with the output of Sei Ito's neo-psychologism experimental novels. Sei Ito faced Hokkaido, his own literary realm, with a new viewpoint through translation of James Joyce's Ulysses, expressing colonial culture in Ulysses in his own novel creation. The process of translating the original text is unconsciously reflected with the translator's Weltanschauung and sociocultural background, accordingly, cultural competence of translator is significant. This verifies that Sei Ito's translation is not a mere translation that delivers verbal significance but a process of cultural transition. This study suggests that Sei Ito's novel, created based on inspiration by the translation process of Ulysses, was a successful case of cultural translation by paying attention to his excellent intercultural intelligence of the original. Also, intended to reestablish literary ideology of Sei Ito, which practiced the essential significance of translation, i.e. cultural clash is not destruction but harmony and re-creation.
