Recently there have been frequent occurrences of accidents involving passengers' feet getting caught in or falling through gaps between platforms and trains. This has led the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to enact a provision that requires installation of gap-fillers at all platforms with minimum 10-cm gaps in order to prevent such accidents. However, despite this provision, the reality is that there are still many curved platforms where gaps remain larger than 10 cm owing to the fact that trains have articulated structures. This paper analyzes and studies the basic reasons for different platform-train gaps occurring due to manufacturing tolerance of wheels and wheel/track maintenance limiting values. In addition, this paper recommends an adjustable gap-filler to fit varying platform-train gaps.
