The purpose of this study was to explore the perception of English-to-Korean transliteration words in Korean newspaper articles among Korean collegians (n=120). Even though there are Korean words for corresponding English words, English transliteration words are used in news articles. For the study, English transliteration words whose pronunciations were written in Korean letters were chosen from news articles and they were divided into three types: English only, English with Korean words and others. The participants were guided to check the degree of their understanding on them and provide their opinions on using English transliteration words. The data analysis revealed some interesting findings as follows: 1) The participants tend to understand transliteration words that they are familiar with or they have already known in English. 2) When encountering unknown English transliteration words and having trouble understanding the meanings, it seemed that they did not usually try to look them up. 3) In regard to the way English transliteration words are shown, the participants showed interest in the way English transliteration words are presented together with their original spellings.
