The meaning of mother tongue speakers or the meaning of a mother tongue should be clearly defined in order to understand the concept of bi- or multilinguals within multilingual societies. Thus, the objective of this research is to investigate Korean immigrant youth’s perspectives on a mother tongue, bilingualism, and tri-lingualism through a questionnaire and semi-structured qualitative interviewing within the multilingual Montreal context, where two majority languages (i.e., French & English) exist along with their heritage language (i.e., Korean) in the host society, focusing on environmental and social factors. In addition, it is generally assumed that bi- or multilingual skills are required as an asset to the Korean society in a global world; however, it is not easy to find specified definitions of bi- or multilinguals and their respective skills. In this regard, this study provides some implications for the Korean society which has become the multilingual society. Some implications for the multilingual Korean society are briefly touched on in this study.
