최근 웹소설은 작가의 개성이 자유롭게 드러나는 다양한 이야기가 만들어지고, 드라마, 영화, 게임 등의 원작으로 활용되는 기회가 늘어나면서 콘텐츠 시장에서 각광을 받고 있다. 그러나 국내에서는 아직 웹소설이 안정적인 시장을 형성하지 못했고, 소수의 주도업체가 관심을 돌리면 언제든지 쇠락할 수 있는 불안전한 환경을 가지고 있다. 본 논문은 새롭게 웹콘텐츠 시장에서 가능성을 인정받고 있는 웹소설의 지속적인 발전방향을 모색하기 위해서, 웹소설이 비교적 활성화되어 있는 북미, 중국, 일본 등의 웹소설 현황을 살펴보고, 이들 시장의 장단점을 통해 국내 웹소설의 지속가능한 성장방안을 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 웹소설을 대표적인 IP 영역으로 성장시킬 필요가 있다는 점, 문학 시장의 활력소가 되도록 선순환 기능을 유도할 필요가 있다는 점, 웹소설에 중요한 요소인 팬픽에 대한 인식 개선이 필요하다는 점, 출판사, 이동통신사, 서점 등이 함께 운영하는 웹소설 플랫폼이 필요하다는 점 등이 연구의 결론으로 도출되었다.
Recently, web novels are attracting much attention in the contents market as diverse stories in which the artist's personality is revealed freely are created, and opportunities for making drama, film, and games are increasing based on the web novels. However, Korean web novels still don't form a stable market, and if a few leading companies terminate their businesses, the market will be declined with an unstable environment. This paper examines the current state and characteristics of web novels in North America, China, and Japan, where web novels are relatively active, in order to explore the ongoing development direction of web novels that have been recognized as a possibility in the new web content market. And we examines the sustainable growth strategies of Korean web novels through exploring the strengths and weaknesses of these countries's web novel markets. As a result of the research, that it is necessary to develop web novels as a representative IP(Intellectual Property) sector, to develop web novels into a vital place in the literary markets, and to create a web novel platform operated by publishers, mobile carriers and bookstores.
