본 연구는 대구시에서 지원하고 있는 대구 경북 영어 마을 4박 5일 영어 체험 학습의 효율성 정도를 알아보고 향 후 대구시 정책 지원 사업의 기초자료로 활용하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 이를 위해 2017년 6월 1일부터 2017년 11월 30일까지 6개월 동안 대구시청 관련자와의 면담과 영어마을의 현장조사 및 관련자들과의 심층면접을 여러 차례 거친 후, 2017년 7월 10일부터 14일까지 5일 동안 최근 영어마을 4박 5일 체험 학습에 참여한 대구시 동구, 서구, 남구, 북구, 중구, 달서구, 달성군, 수성구의 8개 구에 속한 초등학생 5학년 1개 반을 대상으로 234명에게 설문지를 직접 배부 및 수거하여 통계를 내고 결과를 분석하였다. 설문조사 결과에 의하면 8개 구 중 수성구를 제외한 7개구에 속하는 초등학생의 영어마을 체험학습의 만족도와 흥미 정도는 매우 높았다. 뿐만 아니라 학교 영어 수업에 대한 동기 부여와 다양한 영미권 문화 이해를 통해 다문화를 이해하는 능력이 향상되었고 공동체 생활 속에서 협동하는 태도를 가질 수 있었던 것으로 드러났다. 따라서 영어마을 체험학습은 영어공부에 대한 학습자의 태도변화에 긍정적인 영향을 끼치므로 대구시의 지속적인 지원이 필요하나 구별 특성에 따라 지원정도를 가감할 필요가 있어 보인다. 또한 개방형 설문에서 실내의 교실수업보다 요리나 축구 등의 스포츠, 진흙으로 만들기 등 야외활동을 통한 수업 선호도가 높아 보다 다양한 활동 프로그램 보급이 필요하다.
The main goal of this study is to examine elementary school students’ four-nights-and-five-days experience at a Daegu-Gyeongbuk English village, focusing on what English learning experiences they had and what kind of changes had been made in their attitudes towards learning English. Surveys were conducted to examine their learning experiences in the village and the changes in their attitudes toward learning English. For 5 days, from July 10th until July 14th 2017, about 234 boys and girls of elementary schools from 8 districts, Dong gu, Seo gu, Dalseo gu, Susung gu, Jung gu, Buk gu, Nam gu, and Dalsung gun in Daegu area participated in the surveys and interviewed with the researchers to draw more detailed information about students` experiences in the English village. The results revealed that despite the short term of residence at the English village, the students seemed to have had relatively active engagement in learning English conversation. Also, although the village could possibly provide students with rich opportunities to have an active engagement and interaction with English native speakers, it seemed that there existed some limitations in having such experiences inside classrooms. They wanted to have more diverse engagement with English by participating in outdoor activities such as cooking, playing soccer, using mud, and so on. Through survey, students showed some positive changes in their attitudes or strategies toward learning English after the short term of residence.
