The purpose of this action research was to improve collaborative English language learning based on smart education(CELSE) in an elementary school classroom. For this research, CELSE lesson plans were developed, performed, and critically analyzed through reflection by the researcher. To investigate the effects of CELSE on communicative competence, collaborative ability, attitude and satisfaction of the students, data were collected from diverse sources employing pre-and-post questionnaires, class observation evaluation, teacher's journal, student's diary, written interview, and online portfolio. The data analyses yielded the following results. First, CELSE had a statistically significant effect on students' communicative competence, collaborative ability, attitude, and class satisfaction. Second, the students' responses to CELSE was very positive. Third, by using smart devices, students participated in various collaborative activities such as reading, writing, role playing, singing and chanting, going around and investigating, and an active problem-solving. In this processes, students preferred collaboration such as pair and group activities rather than working individually. Fourth, there was an improvement of the teacher-research’s teaching skills in preparing, developing, and utilizing smart devices, organizing learning activities for students, and providing teacher feedback. Finally, based on the results, it is suggested that an English digital textbook should be utilized within a better and smarter work environment such as 1 to 1 or BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) to increase effective learning and teaching.
