방정환 전집은 그간 여러 차례 편찬되었으며, 연구자와 일반 독자에게 많은 편의를 제공해 왔다. 그러나 기존 전집에는 최근에 새로 발견된 자료들은 수록되어 있지 않으며, 원문 비평의 절차를 철저히 하지 않아 표기의 오류도 적지 않게 발견된다. 이에 따라 새로운 전집의 편찬이 요청되고 있다. 전집 발간의 과정은 과거의 텍스트를 현재에 옮기는 작업이라고 할 수 있다. 편집자는 원본 텍스트의 당대적 맥락과 현재 독자들의 가독성을 동시에 고려해야 하며, 정본화를 위한 실무 작업 과정에서 수많은 판단과 선택을 하게 된다. 이 연구는 우리 시대의 요구에 부응하는 방정환 전집 텍스트의 정본화 방향을 모색하기 위한 밑작업으로서, 편찬사적으로 의미가 있는 방정환 전집 4종을 대상으로 기존 전집들이 방정환의 텍스트를 어떻게 표기해 왔는가를 비판적으로 검토해 보았다.
The complete works of Bang Jeong-hwan have been compiled several times. These compilations are very convenient for those intending to profoundly study the author. These works, however, fail to include a lot of material found since. Moreover, they do not follow the procedure of criticism from the original thoroughly and contain several errors. Therefore, there is a need to compile a new complete collection. The process of publishing the complete collection requires transcribing old text into a new form. In this process, the editors must consider both the historical context of the original text as well as readability for today’s readers. They continually find the need to make compromises to balance the definitive edition. This author will examine four different complete collections of Bang Jeong-hwan. This examination is crucial in terms of the historical compilation, and to see critically how the existing complete collections contain Bang Jeong-hwan’s text. Doing this will allow us to discover a way to produce a definitive version in accordance with the demands of this age.
