북아일랜드의 대표적 여성 작가인 크리스티나 리드(Christina Reid)는 북아일랜드의분파주의적 갈등 양상과 그에 대한 문제제기를 통해 뿌리 깊은 국가적 민족적 양분 양상을 극복하고자 하는 노력을 작품에 담아왔다. 리드의 『도자기 찻잔의 차』는 북아일랜드의 개신교와 가톨릭간의 분파주의적 갈등이 공고히 되고 사회화되는 과정에서여성 역시 책임이 있음을 보여준다. 개신교 여성들이 차를 마시며 나누는 대화는 남성들의 정치적 담론 못지않게 개신교 왕당파의 이데올로기적 가치관을 후세에게 주입하고 설파하는 장으로 기능한다. 또한 북아일랜드에서 여성들의 담론은 여성성을 억압하는 기제로 작동하고 있는 점에 리드는 주목하게 해준다. 나아가 개신교도인 베스와 가톨릭교도인 테레사가 윗세대의 여성들이 주입하는 가치관을 뛰어넘고, 두 사람의 우정을 지켜나가는 모습을 통해 분파 이데올로기를 극복할 수 있는 가능성이 제시되고 있다.
Christina Reid, one of the representative women playwrights in Northern Ireland, dramatized the women's life in Belfast during the Troubles of Northern Ireland. In her first play, Tea in a China Cup, Reid provokes questions about the sectarian ideologies of Protestants and Catholics and women's participation in consolidating the sectarian conflict in the domestic arena. In particular, women's talks over china cup function as the means of instilling their social and political views into their children’s mind. Besides, female discourse contributes to constricting women and serving maledominated gender ideology by illuminating femininity in a negative way. Through the friendship of Beth and Theresa as well as their journeys of reinvention, Reid suggests the positive alternative to the sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland.
