아리스토텔레스는 배고픔의 해소와 같은 자연적 상태의 회복 과정을 즐거움의 근원으로 보는 「필레보스」의 쾌락 이론을 거부하고, 즐거움은 자연적 상태의 방해받지 않은 활동 또는 활동의 완성에 있다고 주장한다. 이에 대한 대체적인 해석은 운동 및 생성 과정과 활동의 대비를 배타적으로 이해하고, 그 결과 과정의 즐거움을 즐거움의 영역에서 배제하게 된다. 그런데 이러한 해석은 과정의 즐거움을 인정하는 상식과 충돌하며, 과정의 즐거움을 언급하는 아리스토텔레스 텍스트의 여러 구절과의 불일치 문제를 일으킨다. 본 논문에서는 과정과 활동이 배타적으로 구별되는 두 행위 유형의 대비가 아니라, 사태의 수동적인 변화의 측면과 능동적인 활동의 측면에 대한 대비이며, 따라서 과정의 즐거움이 즐거움의 영역에서 배제되지 않기 때문에 위와 같은 해석상의 난점이 발생하지 않음을 논증한다. 이를 위해 「니코마코스 윤리학」제7권과 제10권에서 전개된 즐거움에 대한 논의를 분석하며, 또한 과정과 활동에 대한 배타적 해석의 근거로 흔히 제시되는 「형이상학」제9권 6장 구절(1048b18-35)과의 연관성을 비판적으로 검토한다. 이를 통해 우리는 과정의 즐거움에 대한 아리스토텔레스의 견해를 보다 정합적으로 명료하게 이해할 수 있다.
Aristotle rejects the theory of pleasure in Philebos, which sees the process of recovery of natural state as the source of pleasure, such as filling hunger, and claims that the pleasure is in the uninterrupted activity of natural state or the completion of activity. Most interpreters of Aristotle exclusively understand the contrast between process(kinēsis or genēsis) and activity(energeia), and as a results exclude the pleasure of process from the realm of pleasure. However this interpretation conflicts with the common sense that acknowledges the pleasure of the process, and causes the inconsistency with some parts of Aristotle’s text, which refer to the pleasure of process. In this paper, It is argued that process and activity are not contrasted between the two types of actions that are distinguished exclusively, but rather in terms of aspects of passive change and active activity, and thus the pleasure of process is not excluded from the realm of pleasure so that the above-described difficulty of interpretation does not occur. To this end, I analyze the theory of pleasure developed in Nicomachean Ethics Ⅶ and X, and critically examine the claims of Metaphysics Ⅸ-6,1048b18-35, which is commonly considered as the basis of the exclusive interpretation of the process and activity. This gives us a more coherent and clear understanding of Aristotle’s theory of pleasure and his view about the pleasure of process.
