The purpose of this paper is to introduce the newly discovered Namsa (南社), a poetry society of the Late Joseon period. Until now, the very existence of Namsa has been mostly unknown. This paper argues that from the perspective of literary and intellectual history of Korea, Namsa is an important group to study. Namsa was organized in the late 1860s by the literary figures belonging to the Soron faction, based in Namchon (southern village), now Hoehyeon-dong at the northern foot of Mt. Namsan. The four founders of the group were HONG Gi-ju (洪岐周) YI Jung-ha (李重夏) JEONG Gi-u (鄭基雨) and YI Geon-chang (李建昌). It started with thirty active members and was later joined by a large number of leading literati of the late Joseon period, including GANG Wi (姜瑋), YI Geon-seung (李建昇), JEONG Beom-jo (鄭範朝), YIO Gyu-hyeong (呂圭亨), YI Nam-gyu (李南珪), YI Gi (李琦), KIM Taek-yeong (金澤榮), HWANG Hyeon (黃玹) and YI Geun-su (李根洙). The group was active for more than thirty years and remained in existence even after the deaths of its key members during the Gwangmu era (1897-1907) of King Gojong. In the wake of the Eulmi Incident (1895) and the subsequent annexation of Korea by Imperial Japan in 1910, the group became divided into pro- and anti-Japanese members; they formed new poetry societies, each leading the creative and academic activities of their time in the field of Classical Chinese writings in Korea. The intellectual lineage of Widang JEONG In-bo (鄭寅普, 1893-1950) was rooted in the creative and academic activities of this historical group. Major works by the members of the group can be cited as Chullyu sicheop (春柳詩帖, A Collection of the Poetry on Spring Willows) and Gugu sohancheop (九九銷寒帖, A Collection of the Poetry on Thawing of the Winter ), compiled in 1873 and 1878 respectively. Other and later works include Hansagaek siseon (韓四客詩選, A Selection of Works by Four Korean Poets), an anthology of the poetry by Namsa members compiled by Gang Wi; Yongdeung sihwa (榕燈詩話, Critical Essays on Poetry Written in Exile under An Oil Lamp) by Jeong Man-jo, a collections of essays written around 1904; and Joya siseon (朝野詩選, A Selection of Joseon Poetry Works) a comprehensive anthology of mostly Late Joseon poetry works by some two hundred poets, compiled by one of the leading Namsa members, Yi Gi, from 1916 to 1919. This paper sheds light on the significance of Namsa and underscores the need for further and in-depth research on the literary works of many of its members.
