Cultural significance of sea bathing and beach in 19th-Century Germany - A maritime interpretation of Theodor Storm's novel 「Psyche」(1875) -

본 논문은 19세기 독일문화와 바다의 관계를 여러 각도에서 조명해 보고자 하는 관심에서 출발한 작업의 일환이다. 본 논문에 앞선 유관 연구 주제들 중, 특히 북독의 ‘비네타 전설’, ‘방황하는 네덜란드인 전설’과 일정한 대비적 의미관계를 이루고 있다. ‘비네타 전설’이 자연의 위력에 대한 굴복과 공포심과 결합되어 있고, ‘방황하는 네덜란드인 전설’이 근대의 쉼 없는 세계정복과 세계발견 욕망의 강박관념과 결합되어 있는 것이라면, 해수욕과 해변은 이러한 공포와 강박과는 정반대되는 새로운 바다의 (의미)경험을 의미한다. 이 새로운 경험은 19세기 유럽의 낙관주의와도 맥을 같이 하는 것이었다. 18세기 중반에 발명된 해수욕이라는 새로운 신체활동은 19세기 중반에 이르러 근대적 노동과 사회의 메커니즘 속에서 지친 인간, 그리고 그런 인간을 위한 치유와 재충전의 공간으로서의 바다이해로 이어졌던 것이다. 본 논문은 해수욕이라는 이러한 친해양적 바다발견이 어떻게 젠더와 성, 예술의 사회적 성취, 사회통합, 결혼과 연애 등에 대한 문학적 내러티브와 결합되는가에 대하여 살펴보았다.

This work analyzes Theodor Storm's Novel 「Psyche」(1875) from the angle of the perception of the sea in change. The physical and mental relation of normal Central Europeans towards the sea are increasingly changing in the course of the 19th century. The invention of sea bathing as a relaxing, delightful and health-promoting activity plays a significant role. One does not any more look at the sea with the deeply rooted abhorrence like in religious medieval image of the sea. A number of seaside resorts are established in Germany on the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. Storm's novel tells of a waterfall on the beach, where a young woman is saved by a young artist, sculptor. The event has left a deep impression on both of them. The analysis is based on the thesis that there is an analogy between the beach and the Storm's ‘childwoman’, a female being - neither a woman nor a child. The beach, as a newly discovered space between sea and land, tends to liquidate the old dualism of ‘sea and land’. It puts dichotomous view into question. Storm, one of the few German writers ‘with a view of the sea’, offers in 「Psyche」 the typical bourgeois dualistic concept of gender; on the one hand, the nakedness of the woman, her shame and her isolation, and the sublimation of the male protagonist by art, on the other hand. The interpretation and analysis make us clear that Storm, with his maritime geological sensitivity, corrects and complements the stiff bourgeois concept of gender, unless he breaks through.
