本稿は箒の俗信から日本の体罰文化を考察したものである。箒はただの掃 除道具ではなかった。民俗社会における箒は外部から入ってきた悪い気を追 い出したり、入ってくるのを防ぎ、また妖物を退治する魔除けの役割を果た すとともに縁を切ってくれる呪力をもつ道具でもあった。神聖視され、特別 な用途で使われるときは元の名前ではなく、違う名前に命名され精神的な意 味も持っていた。 こうした箒は体罰道具として使ってはならなかった。その理由は大きく四 つに整理することができる。一つ目、箒の使用における禁忌を破ることで、 予想もしなかった不幸をもたらす可能性がある。二つ目、箒には死者の魂を呼んでくる力があるため、もし間違って使うと、死霊が憑りつく危険性があ る。三つ目、箒には体の中にある魂(精神)を外に出す呪力があるため、箒によ る体罰は、霊魂を失う可能性が高い。四つ目、箒の体罰はあくまでも悪霊の 入った死体に対するもので、これを生きている人に適用することは死者扱い するのと同じ意味を持つ。こうした意味を箒がもつので、箒の体罰は厳しく 禁じられ、もしそれに背くと出産と出世において障害や不幸を招くという俗 信まで生じたのである。このように日本の民俗社会において箒の体罰は厳し く禁止されていたのである。
The broom is not simply a tool of cleaning. It was used as an apotropaic tool to protect from the wily things or sweep away harmful energy and also it has the magical power to cut the relation in the traditional society. By its functions when it was treated as a sacred tool, it was called differently from the original name. In corporal punishment, however, broom was prohibited in use. By breaking the taboo, it may bring the misfortune. Broom can cause the spirit possession due to the power of summoning the souls of the departed. The magical power of broom can sweep away the energy(spirit) from the body, but if used improperly to the normal child, the child’s soul can be lost. Broom punishment suppose to be performed on the demon spirit, but practicing on a living person which means he/she is regarded as a departed spirit. This is the reason why punishing with the broom was prohibited, and superstitious idioms was created such as stand in the way of advancement or bring a difficult birth. In this context, Broom punishment was strongly restricted in traditional japanese society.
