언어학은 구조주의 시대로부터 변형생성 이론과 인지문법 이론 시대를 거치면서 연구의 흐름이 문법 기술로부터 문법 해석으로 바뀌고 있다. 외국어교육 영역에서는 구조주의적인 구문분석 방법이 한계를 드러내면서 문법구조에 대한 기술보다 문법구조에 대한 해석이 더 효과적인 방법으로 알려지고 있다. 본 글에서는 구문분석 방법론의 한계를 짚어 보는 가운데 언어학 연구방법의 한 기반으로 구문해석 방법론을 제시하고자 한다. 외국인을 위한 한국어문법이라면 오늘날의 모어 화자의 한국어문법 기술(분석)로부터 외국인 학습자의 한국어문법 해석으로 방향 전환을 시도해야 하며 이를 위해서는 구문 분석으로부터 구문 해석으로의 시대를 열어가야 한다. 외국인 한국어 학습자는 구문이 어떻게 구성되었다는 구문구조 분석보다 구문이 왜 이런 구조로 짜였는가 하는 구문구조 해석을 더 바라고 있기 때문이다. 구문해석 방법론 구축을 위해 문화인지적 해석기반을 마련하였는데, 거기에는 주관성과 주관화 해석기반, 원형과 범주화의 해석기반, 어휘화와 문법화의 해석기반, 자의성과 도상성의 해석기반 등이 있다. 논의 과정에서 하나의 잣대, 하나의 표준으로 모든 구문을 분석하고 해석한다는 것은 불가능한 일이며 구문분석 방법이든 구문해석 방법이든 만능의 법칙은 없다는 사실을 실감하게 된다.
With the shift of the era from structuralism to generative grammar and cognitive grammar, the mainstream of linguistics has changed its research focus from description to interpretation. Foreign language education then realized that, given the limitations of structuralist syntactic analysis method, the interpretation of syntactic structure may be more effective than the description of syntactic structure. This article tries to reveal the limitations of syntactic analysis, and advocate the method of syntactic interpretation for foreign language teaching. Korean grammar for foreigners should make a shift through the ways in which the description of grammar for native speakers should be turned to the interpretation of grammar for foreigners. Therefore, the first thing that should be done is to turn syntactic analysis to syntactic interpretation, since foreign Korean learners are more eager to know how and why than what the syntactic structure is. The construction of syntactic interpretation methodology presupposes the basis of culture- cognition, which includes subjectivity and subjectivization, prototype theory and categorization, lexicalization and grammaticalization, arbitrariness and iconicity. However, I have to admit that it is indeed difficult to use a single standard to analyze or explain all the syntactic structures. Either the syntactic analysis method or the syntactic interpretation method can never become a universal law.
