마르크스는 한편으로는 역사철학에 대한 위대한 해체자이지만 다른 한편 그의역사유물론은 근대적 역사철학의 또 하나의 유형이다. 마르크스와 엥겔스에게 지배적인 역사변증법의 도식은 프롤레타리아 대중의 프롤레타리아 계급으로의 목적론적인 변증법적 발전 도식이다. 이 도식에 따르면 프롤레타리아트는 자기의식과 자신의 사명에 대한 의식을 취하고 계급으로 구성되며, 이 과정의 종점은 역사의 종언으로서의 공산주의이다. 그러나 계급으로서의 프롤레타리아트와 대중으로서의 프롤레타리아트에 대한 마르크스의 이중적 분석 속에는, 모순은 화해 불가능하다는 관념 위에 구성되는 비목적론적인 변증법이 작동한다. 이러한 비목적론적인 변증법은 프롤레타리아트를 ‘역사를 구성하는’ 존재에서 ‘역사 속에서 구성되는’ 존재로 이전시킨다. 문제는 계급과 대중의 관계에 대한 이러한 비목적론적인 변증법이 항상 억압된다는 데에 있다. 발리바르는 마르크스에게 암시적으로 존재하는 계급과 대중 사이의 비목적론적인 변증법을 독자적인 방식으로 전개하려 시도한다. 그는 새로이 구성될 역사적 인과성의 도식이 ‘토대와 상부구조의 합’ 대신에, ‘양립 불가능하면서 동시에 분리 불가능한, 설명의 두 토대들로서 주체화양식과 생산양식의 결합’이 되어야 한다고 주장하고, 이러한 도식에 상응하는 ‘해방’, ‘변혁’, ‘시빌리테’라는 세 개의 정치 개념을 정식화시킨다. 그의 시도는 마르크스의 사회적 관계의 존재론의 지평 위에서 대중 정치의 활성화를 통한 계급 정치의 유효화를 사고하고자 하는 하나의 시도이다.
The fundamental internal contradiction of marx’s theory of history lies in that on the one hand he totalizes class struggle, but on the other hand he refuse to do that. Marxism as a philosophy of history which totalizes class struggle is surely dead. But ‘marxism as a limited theory’(Louis Althusser) is not the case. Etienne Balibar deconstructs and tries to reshape Marxism by combining marxian problematic of economic antagoinsms and spinozist problematic of ideological antagonisms. He tries to generalizes Marxism by introducing the concept ‘heteronomy of heteronomy of politics’ and the ethical figure of ‘civility’ which is irrecucible to that of ‘emancipation’ and that of ‘transformation’. In his scheme of historical causality ‘generalized economy’ or mode of production and ‘the general- ized ideology’ or mode of subjection consist two bases of explanation in that the effects of the imagery can only appear through and by means of the real, and the effects of the real through and by means of the imagery. Antonio Negri also refuses marxist philosophy of history. But the theorization of Balibar conducted on the base of ontology of social relations is politically more valid and progressive and theoretically more consistant than that of Negri’s who substitues marxian ontology of social relations with ontology of power.
