해남 정우형 후손 가에서 나온 간찰은 2천 건에 가깝다. 이 간찰은 보관상태가 양호하며, 봉투가 있는 경우가 대부분이어서 발신자를 거의 알 수 있다. 또한 대부분 정우형 한 사람에게 온 것이며, 연속 간찰이 많아서 발신자는 510여명으로 압축된다. 발신연대는 1864년부터 1936년 사이인데, 그중 1884년부터 1894년까지에 많은 부분이 집중되어 있다. 간찰을 통해서 정우형은 통인부터 시작하여 육방 및 호장을 골고루 역임한 해남 향리였음을 알 수 있다. 그의 아버지도 해남 향리였으며, 할아버지는 해남 군관을 역임했던 점에 비추어 집안 대대로 무임 또는 향리직에 종사했음을 알 수 있다. 발신자들은 주소지가 대부분 해남, 전주, 강진, 영암, 장흥, 서울 등으로 되어 있는데, 그중 해남, 강진, 영암, 장흥 등에서 보내온 사람은 향리가 가장 많고, 사돈이나 인척관계에 있는 사람이 대다수이다. 그런가하면 영저리가 보내온 경우도 많은데, 가장 많은 것은 완영에서 보내온 것이고, 수영과 병영에서 보내온 경우도 많다. 서울에서는 경저리가 보내온 경우와 궁방전 담당 인물이 보낸 경우가 대부분이다. 한편 관직자에게서 온 간찰도 있는데, 해남현감을 지낸 적이 있거나 이와 관련한 사람, 또는 정우형과 일찍부터 알고 지내던 무관직에 종사하는 사람들이다. 즉 정우형과 왕복한 사람들은 대부분 중인계층이라고 할 수 있다.
The letters from a descendant of Jeonguhyeong(鄭愚衡) in Haenam are almost 2,000 cases. These letters are in good preservation and there are mostly envelopes, we can almost see the sender. Most of the letters were sent to Jeonguhyeong, each person wrote many letters. The number of sender is about 510. Those were sent from 1,864 to 1,936 years, especially from 1,884 to 1,894 years. It is known by the letters that Jeonguhyeong was a local official of Haenam having served variously as a messenger for a county magistrate(Tongin), an employee of the six government departments(Yukbang), and a chief of employee for a village(Hojang). His father was also a local official of Haenam, his grandfather had filled a military officer. It can be said his family has been an officer or a local official for generations. The sender address is Haenam, Jeonju, Gangjin, Youngam, Jangheung, Seoul. People sending letters from Haenam, Gangjin, Youngam, Jangheung are almost a local official and his in law or relatives. There are also many letters written by the messenger of Provincial Office(Youngjeori), the most is sent from the Wan Provincial Office, and there are also many from the messenger of the naval office and the army office. There are many cases sent by the messenger dispatched from outside of Seoul(Gyeongjeori) and a tax gatherer in the letters from Seoul. Furthermore, there are also letters from an administration official, that is, people who has served as a mayor in Haenam province or a military official keeping up an acquaintance with Jeonguhyeong for a very long time. It can be said that people associating with Jeonguhyeong are the middle class. The most contents of the letters are tax related. Those show clearly the name of taxes and a sum of money charging to the people, and the tyranny of the competent authorities and a petty official of a provincial town pressing for payment in the late Joseon. There are also contents of a present. Those show which things the prestige products were made in Haenam, and what people preferred to at that time.
