The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of English as an Intercultural Language (EIcL) (Green and Lee 2015; Lee 2012; Sifakis 2004) and to present the results of two studies that identified Korean university students’ perceptions of EIcL. The first study examined the perceptions of 60 Korean university students about the incorporation of EIcL in the EFL classroom. The second study looked at the perceptions of 25 Korean university students who took part in study abroad experiences in the Philippines, a so-called member of the outer circle (Kachru 1992). The results of these two studies indicate that there is an awareness of and interest in learning EIcL on the part of the participants. The results also have a number of valuable implications for educators and learners regarding the role of English in today’s highly interconnected, global environment.
