본고는 享保信使記録를 통해, 通信使行 속에서 堂上譯官이 어떤 일들을 해왔는가 확인해보고자 한 것이다. 対馬藩의 宗家文書에는 당시 三使를 향한 창구가 오로지 堂上譯官(上々官)으로만 한정되어 있기 때문에 堂上譯官을 제외한 다른 譯官의 역할은 그렇게 많이 수록되어 있지 않았다. 이를 토대로 확인해 본 결과, 堂上譯官은 通信使의 선봉에 서서 일본과 마주한 거의 모든 것을 챙겨야 했음을 알 수 있었다. 먼저 堂上譯官은 対馬와 그 외 일본 측의 인사들을 이어주는 창구의 역할을 수행하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 対馬는 堂上譯官이 없으면 어떤 인사가 와도 三使를 만나지 못하게 하였다. 또한 堂上譯官은 三使의 뜻을 전할 뿐만 아니라, 三使를 대신하여 通信使를 대표하기도 하였다. 堂上譯官은 또한 단순한 의견의 전달자가 아니었다. 堂上譯官은 対馬 측에게 필요한 정보를 제공해주기도 하고, 필요하다면 三使를 대신해서 対馬 측을 설득시키기도 했으며, 対馬로부터 三使를 변호하기도 했다. 때문에 対馬 측은 堂上譯官에게 많은 책임을 물었다. 통신사 측이 사전에 対馬와 약속해 둔 것을 어겼을 경우에는 対馬 측에서 쉽게 三使에게 그 책임을 물을 수 없으니, 堂上譯官이 제대로 일본어를 전달하지 않았기 때문에 이런 일이 발생했다며 모든 책임을 전가하였다, 그러한 것을 통해 対馬가 요구하는 일을 三使에게 보다 잘 전달하라는 압박이었던 것이다. 반대로 三使도 일이 원만하게 해결되지 않으 면 堂上譯官을 질책하였다. 堂上譯官은 어느 한 편에만 섰던 것이 아니라 使行의 원활한 진행을 위해 양측의 입장을 고려했던 자리임을 알 수 있다. 때문에 対馬조차 때로는 堂上譯官에 대한 배려를 아끼지 않았던 것이다.
Yeok-kwan(interpreter) played an important role in Tongshinsa(通信使). However, there are few records written by Yeok-kwan, and there are not much research about Yeok-kwan within Tongshinsa. The 9th Tongshinsa in 1719 was not so different. Fortunately, through Souke-Monjyo(宗家文書) which was recorded by Tushima-han, we could presume what role Yeok-kwan played in Tongshinsa. But, despite 10 Yeok-kwan, we could not find out many things about Yeok-kwan except Dangsang Yeok-kwan(堂上訳官), because Dangsang Yeok-kwan was the only way to communicate with Sam-sa(the highest executive). When Dangsang Yeok-kwan was away, no one could not meet Sam-sa. Sometimes Yeok-kwan represented Tongshinsa. Sam-sa for a smooth schedule, had an argument with Tushima-han, and defended Sam-sa from Tushima-han. Forthesereasons,hewasalwaysreprimandedbyTushima-han.When a problem arises, Tushima-han has always reprimand Dangsang Yeok-kwan for failing to communicate well in japanese because it was not easy to reprimand Sam-sa directly. Sam-sa also reprimanded Dangsang Yeok-kwan for the same reason. Dangsang Yeok-kwan was not a simple interpreter, but an important position that always considered the relationship between Tongshinsa and Tushima-han, while giving priority to the interests of Tongshinsa. Because of these reasons, Tushima-han always paid attention to Dangsang Yeok-kwan.
