박사형의 「南草歌」는 조선시대 南草(담배)를 소재로 한 가사로는 그 최초의 작품이다. 담배라는 일상적 사물을 문학적 소재로 삼아 뛰어난 가사작품으로 형상화시킨 그의 예술적 정감이 돋보인 작품이다. 또한 작가는 남초가를 통해 자신이 살아 온 삶의 고뇌를 진솔하게 표현하여 작품의 내용이 곧작가의 현실이었음을 실제적으로 표현하고 있으며 당시 신문물로 여겨졌던남초(담배)가 단순한 기호품이 아니라 인간의 생명을 구하는 靈藥, 活命草임을 증명하는 작품이기도 하다. 박사형의 南草歌는 단순한 담배에 대한 예찬이 아니라 남초를 통해 질병으로 인한 죽음의 위기를 극복하고 새 삶을 얻게 된 작가의 실제적, 실증적 체험을 바탕으로 이루어진 점에서 이 작품이갖는 현실적 의미는 크다. 또한 작가는 남초를 통해 이상향을 발견하였으며그것은 곧 신선세계가 아닌 충효의 유교적 현실을 바탕으로 무병장수한 인간의 삶, 생명 존중의 인간세계를 南草歌에서 구현하고 있는 데서 작가의 이상향을 보게 되는 것이다.
