본고는 『林下筆記』의 문헌지장편에 기록된 국어학 관련 기사를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이유원은 18세기 이래 조선 지식인들의 博物學的 경향에 영향을 입어 『임하필기』를 편찬하였다. 이유원은 기존 연구에서 정치가, 문인, 금석학자로서의 측면만 강조되었는데, 국어학적 측면에서도 연구할 만한 가치가 있는 인물이다. 이유원이 『임하필기』에서 기록하고 있는 언어와 관련된 자료들은 대부분 앞선 학자들의 저술을 인용한 것들이다. 조선 후기의 많은 학자들이 그렇듯, 기본적으로 ‘諺文’에 대한 관심이 컸고, 文字와 語源, 物名이나 呼稱, 國名 등 이름에 대한 관심도 많았다. 이유원은 막대한 양의 藏書를 자랑했던 장서가답게, 고대로부터 조선 후기에 이르는 다양한 책들을 참고하여 『임하필기』를 편찬하였다. 이유원의 『임하필기』에 나타난 각종 언어 관련 논의들은 국어학사의 기술에서도 중요한 의미를 갖는다.
This paper aims to look into the articles related to Korean linguistics recorded in a piece of <Munheonjijang> of Imhapilgi. Yi-Yuwon compiled Imhapilgi under the influence of the Joseon intellectuals’ natural history trend since the 18th century. Actually, with regard to Yi-Yuwon, the existing researches have put emphasis on only the aspect as a politician, literary person and epigraphist; nevertheless, Yi-Yuwon is a figure worthy of study from the aspect of Korean linguistics. Most of the materials related to the language Yi-Yuwon recorded in Imhapilgi are those which Yi-Yuwon quoted from his preceding scholars’ writing. As was usual with many scholars in the late Joseon Dynasty, their interest in ‘Eon-mun’ was big, and also had much concern for ‘a name’ such as a letter, the origin of a word, and a name of a thing and a country, etc. Yi-Yuwon’s family possessed an immense quantity of books, so Yi-Yuwon could compile Imhapilgi by referring to a wide variety of books covering from ancient times to the late period of the Joseon Dynasty. All sorts of discussions related to a language shown in Imhapilgi have important significance even in the description of the history of Korean linguistics.
