본 연구의 목적은 제2 소피스트 운동의 수사학적 함의를 살펴보는 데 있다. 본 연구는 로마제국 내에서 제2 소피스트 운동의 위상을 재평가하면서 연설 분야에서 문화적 현상을 주도했다는 점을 부각시키고자 한다. 실제로 제2 소피스트들은 극장이나 종교적인 제전에서 자신의 연설기술을 보여줌으로써 당대에 걸출한 문화의 지도자로, 연예인으로 각광을 받았다는 점을 고려한다면 이런 작업은 제2 소피스트들을 이해하는 데 필수적인 과정이라 할 수 있다. 더 나아가 사회적이고 정치적인 맥락에서도 제2 소피스트들은 로마제국의 핵심 세력으로 군림해왔음을 밝힐 필요가 있다. 당시 황제들은 문제가 있는 도시에 소피스트들을 대사로 파견하였다. 소피스트들은 황제들과 총독들과 지방의 이권을 변호하며 자신의 영향력을 극대화하며 황제들을 포함하여 로마의 유력한 사람들과 친밀한 관계를 형성했다. 이런 사실을 토대로 제2 소피스트들은 연설가를 넘어 사회적이고 정치적인 맥락에서도 자신들의 고유한 영역을 구축할 정도로 세력을 형성했다. 이제까지 제2 소피스트에 대한 연구가 피상적이었다면, 본 연구는 제2 소피스트들이 ‘제2 소피스트 운동’이라는 차원까지 확산될 수 있었던 이유를 수사학적 함의를 그리고 문화적이고, 사회 · 정치적인 요인들을 살펴볼 것이다. 궁극적으로 제2 소피스트 위상에 대한 재정립을 시도할 것이다.
The purpose of this research is to examine rhetorical implications of the Second Sophistic. This research revaluates the status of the Second Sophistic in the Roman Empire and highlights that it took the lead in the oratory field of its cultural phenomenon. Actually the Second Sophists showed their oratory in a theater or a religious feast, and if they are taken into consideration in that they were in the spotlight as the outstanding leaders of the culture or the celebrities of their time, we can say it is essential to understand this work. Moreover, in the social and political context we need to find out that they reigned over the people as key members of the Roman Empire. In those days, emperors dispatched the sophists as the special envoys to the cities giving rise to trouble. The sophists defended emperors and governors, advocated rights of provinces, had their strong influence and built a intimate relationship with influential men including emperors. On the basis of this, beyond orators they formed their proper fields in the social and political line, and built almost their power, too. Until now, the research on the Second Sophistic has been superficial, but this research will show the causes that the Second Sophists got spread over the Second Sophistic Movement, that is, its rhetorical implications, the cultural factors, and the social and political ones. Ultimately, I will try to reestablish its position of the Second Sophistic.
