이상의 문학에서, 특히 이상의 소설에서 간과해서는 안 될 주요 서사 장치가 반복이다. 반복은 이상의 소설들에서 서사담론을 구현하는 일종의 관례를 형성한다. 반복은 이미 내러티브의 운명이라 할 것인데, 소설에서 이는 대개 사건의반복을 통해 실현된다. 그런데 이상의 소설에서 반복은 세 가지로 유형화된다. ①어구와 문장 단위, ②사건 단위,③ 작품 단위가 그것이다. 첫 번째 유형은 말더듬기를 통해 통사적 균열을 가하며, 두 번째 유형은 사건을 재배치하면서 시간에 균열을 가한다. 특히 세 번째의 반복 유형은 작품과 작품을 연결하는 상호 텍스트성을 이루면서 이상 문학의 고유한 담론 정체성을 구현한다. 이상 문학에서의 반복 요인을 규약으로 규정했다고 해서, 그 서사요소를 기호론적 방법에 의해 다루고자 함은 아니다. 그것은 반복의 질서를 환기함에 있지형식의 규칙을 발견하고 구조를 정초하고자 함이 아니다. 이상의 소설에서, 반복은 무수한 의미의 주름을 만들어낸다. 그렇게 나는 이 반복을 들뢰즈의 ‘주름’으로 보고자 한다. 들뢰즈에게 주름은 차이이고, 그 차이는 끊임없이 유동하는 생성이다. 그렇게 그 차이는 이상 소설에서 사유의 생성을 위한 특이점을 만들어낸다. 그것은 이상의 관념이자 사상을 읽어낼 기호이다. 반복은 그렇게 이상의 정신, 이상의 사유, 이상의 철학을 세상에 전하는 방식이다. 이상의 소설에서 탐구해야 할 진정한 주제는 바로 이 정신의 힘이다. 그렇게 이상의 소설들에서 반복은 동일성의 재현이 아닌 차이의 생성이다. 그런 점에서 이상의 소설은 일종의 사유의 모험이다. 반복은 그 사유 이미지를 드러내는 형식적 체계이다. 말더듬기나 사건의 겹침은 이상 소설의 독특한 주름을 이룬다. 그러한 중첩은 한 텍스트에만 나타나는 것이 아니라 텍스트와 텍스트 사이를 횡단한다. 그것은 펼침을 통하여 이상의 정신과 감정을 내보인다. 그렇게이상의 소설에서 반복은 그의 사상을 들여다 볼 징표가 된다. 또한 이상 소설의 난해함을 해석할 실마리가 된다.
In Lee, Sang’s literature, especially his novels, the reiteration is a important device which must not be overlooked. In his novels, the reiteration is a kind of convention which implements the narrative discourse. The reiteration is formed in three layers : with a unit of phrases or clauses, with a unit of events, with a unit of pieces of work. The reiteration with a unit of pieces of work produces intertextuality making connection to each work. In a novel, the reteration, mainly with a unit of events, is necessity of narrative. In Lee, Sang’s novels, it is categorized in three types according to the unit. The Code of Reiteration is not a study regarding semiotics. This study does not focus on exploring the structures of reiteration. In Lee, Sang’s novels, the reiteration generates plissement of innumerable meanings, which is related to plissement in the discourse of Gilles Deleuze. Plissement means differences which generate singularity in Lee, Sang’s novels. It is the symbol of the ideas of Lee, Sang. The reiteration becomes the vehicle notifying the spirit, reason and philosophy of Lee, Sang. In Lee, Sang’s novels, the reiteration is not a reappearance of sameness. Rather, it is a creation of differences. Lee, Sang’s novels are kind of exploration of ideas. The reiteration is a formal system displaying the images of the ideas. Stutters and overlapping of events form the distinct plissement of Lee, Sang’s novels. It reveals the spirit and emotion of Lee, Sang through unfolding. Through this process, the reiteration becomes the symbol of his ideas. Furthermore, it becomes the clue of interpreting the abstruseness of his novels.
