본 논문은 모든 것이 허용되는 다원주의시대에 차용미술(Appropriation Art)의 예술적 질(Quality)을 어떻게 평가할 것인지에 대한 문제의식에서 출발했다. 타인의 이미지를 차용한 작품들의 예술적 가치를 규명하고, 차용미술에 적용될 수 있는 비평방식을 도출하기 위해 아서 단토(Arthur Danto)의 예술이론을 분석했다. 차용미술의 예술적 질은 차용이미지가 해당 작품이 의도하는 바를 구현하는 데 적절했는지 여부에 따라평가가 가능하다. 차용미술의 비평은 차용 작품의 의미를 추론하여 차용이미지가 어떤 역할을 수행했는지 설명하는 것이고, 이것을 통해 해당 작품의 평가의 합당한 근거를 제시하는 것이다. 필자는 동시대의 차용 작품들은 차용이미지를 수사적 장치의 하나로 이용하고 있고, 차용이미지가 해당 작품의 의미를 강화하는데 적절했는지의 여부에 따라 그 작품의 예술적 질을 평가할 수 있다는 점을 제시했다. 이와 더불어 차용이미지를 수사적으로 이용하는 방식에는 첫째, 차용이미지를 오브제처럼 이용하는 방식이 있고, 둘째, 차용이미지의 표상 방식의 힘을 이용하는 방식이 있다는 것을 제시했다.
The thesis started with a question of how to evaluate the artistic quality of appropriation arts in the Age of Pluralism. To analyze the artistic values of appropriation arts and to derive the method of criticisms that could be applied to appropriation arts, I analyzed Arthur Danto’s the theory of art. I deduced the artistic value of appropriation arts and the method of criticisms on them through analysing his theory of art. The artistic quality of appropriation arts can be assessed depending on whether the borrowed image was adequate to embody the artist’s intention. The criticism of appropriation arts is to infer the meaning of them and to explain the role of the borrowed image in them, thereby presenting a reasonable basis for the evaluation of the work. I have asserted that the contemporary appropriation arts use the borrowed image as one of the rhetoric devices, and that we can evaluate the artistic quality of the work depending on whether the borrowed image is adequate to enhance the meaning of the work. In addition, I have argued that there are two ways in the methods of using borrowed images as the rhetoric devices. Firstly, there is a way to change the context through the expansion or majority of borrowed images and secondly, there is a way to use the power of representation in the borrowed image.
