본 연구에서는 조선시대 소설 중 애정소설 작품을 중심으로 작품에 나타난 애정의 표현과 그 문학적 의미를 살폈다. 조선시대 소설이 다 그러했듯이 애정소설 또한 당시 유교적 이데올로기를 바라보는 태도에 따라 그 인식과 평가가 달랐다. 조선시대 애정소설 중 정절 주제를 통해 도덕성을 강조한 작품에서 남녀 주인공의 사랑이 집단적 사회윤리 안에서 유기적 관계를 맺고 있다면, 애정주제를 통해 심미적(쾌락적)효과를 강조한 애정소설 작품에서 남녀 주인공의 사랑은 개인윤리의 범주를 벗어나지않은 경우가 많았다. 반면에 도덕성과 심미적(쾌락적) 효용성을 동시에 충족시키는 애정소설 작품에 나타난 남녀 주인공의 사랑은 개인윤리 차원을 넘어 사회적 집단윤리까지 포함하는 그 수용의 범주를 크게 확대하는 결과를 보이기도 하였다. 또한 정절 주제를 통해도덕성을 강조한 애정소설 작품에서 나타난 남녀 주인공의 사랑이 이타적이라면, 애정주제를 통해 쾌락성을 강조한 소설에서 남녀 주인공의 사랑은 유희적 성격이 농후하였다. 반면에 도덕성과 쾌락성을 동시에 강조한 애정소설 작품에서는 남녀 주인공의 애정표현은이타적이며 유희적인 성격을 모두 공유하여 독자의 흥미를 극대화하는 문학적 효과를 나타내고 있음을 확인할 수 있다.
