안토니오 무뇨스 몰리나가 2009년 발표한 『시대의 밤 La noche de los tiempos』은 1936년 스페인 내전의 소용돌이로부터 도피해 미국에 도착한 주인공 아벨이 회상하는 1년 전부터 현재까지의 이야기이다. 스페인 내전의 대립 당사자인 노동자와 보수층이라는 사회 계층을 각자 대표하는 아벨과 아델라의 가족 구성을 통해 내전이라는 충돌에 이른 두 적대 세력의 문제점을 보여주었고, 밀회 대상이었던 벨리가 추구하는 이상주의는 죽음의 문턱에서 간신히 생존한 아벨이 경험한 현실과 대립된다. 과거의 실존 인물들을 재현하여 과거 좌파의 문제점을 분석하는 도구로 삼았으며, 뿌리 깊은 공화파의 일원인 아벨이 공산주의자들에게 살해될 위험에서 도피하는 과정은 인민전선에 의해 성립된 제2공화정의 문제점과 내전 초기 우파 및 좌파에 의한 폭력과 공포상황을 보여주었다. 결국 작품은 스페인 내전에 있어서 좌파의 문제점을 좌파의 시각에서 파헤친 자성론이라고 평가된다.
The Night of Time published by Antonio Muñoz Molina in 2009 is a story of what Abel, the hero, recollects about the period of one year from 1936, when the Spanish Civil War took place to the time when he arrived in the United States, fleeing from the conflict. The author unveils the conflicting interests of the two opposing groups, who embroiled themselves in the Civil War, through the married couple, Abel and Adela, who respectively represents workers and the conservative royalists, the two opposing parties to the Civil War. The idealism of Biely, Abel’s secret lover, stands in stark contrast to the reality of Abel, who has barely escaped death. The author revives the historical figures as a means of scrutinizing what the leftists stood for. The way Abel, a Republican, fled from the communists lays bare the complexities of the Second Republic established by the People’s Front as well as violence and terror unleashed not only by the rightists but also the leftists at the initial stage of the Civil War. In a nutshell, the novel would best be described as a soul-searching from the angle of the left on what they did during the Spanish Civil War.
