「서해무릉기」는 어떤 유형에 속하는 작품인지, 작가가 제기하려던 문제는 무엇인지, 공간적 배경인 서해무릉도의 성격을 어떻게 규정할지 등 여러 쟁점에 대해 의견이 분분하다. 이런 상황이 초래된 건 상당 부분이 작품 연구의 기초인 이본의 현황을 제대로 검토하지 않은 데 기인한다. 지금까지는 이화여대본과 김광순본만 가지고 이 작품을 고찰해 왔다. 하지만 이제까지 알려지지 않은 이본 세 종이 고려대, 성균관대, 아단문고에 소장돼 있다. 이 외에 다른 작품 뒤에 일부를 필사한 경우도 눈에 띈다. 이 글에서는 이런 이본들을 대비해 선후 관계와 계열을 분명히 하고, 그러한 변이가 어떤 의미를 갖는지 살폈다. 이본 가운데 이화여대본․아단문고본․김광순본이 한 계열을 이루고, 고려대본․성균관대본이 다른 계열을 이룬다. 그중에서 앞의 세 이본이 원작에 더 가까운 원본 계열로 보이며, 뒤의 두 이본은 좀더 후대에 형성된 변이형이다. 원작이 한문본일 가능성은 낮다. 필자는 원본 계열 중에서 김광순본이 다른 두 이본보다 낫고, 후대 변이형과도 변별되는 선본(善本)이라고 판단한다. 따라서 김광순본을 연구의 기본 텍스트로 삼아야 한다고 생각하며, 작품의 지향을 섬세하게 읽으려면 고려대본을 아울러 참조해야 할 거라고 본다. 후대 변이형은 인과 관계를 분명히 했고, 모호했던 적대자의 형상을 강화했다. 이렇게 서사의 긴밀성을 높이고, 적대자를 구체화함으로써 원본 계열에 비해 애정소설로서의 성격을 분명히 했다. 군도담을 수용한 게 애정의 적대자를 구체화하기 위해서라는 점에서 공간적 배경인 서해무릉을 이해하는 관점도 조정할 필요가 있다. 이상향을 제시했다거나 체제 저항 세력의 본거지로 형상화했다기보다는 진실한 애정의 가치를 발견하는 장소라는 의미가 짙기 때문이다. 이 작품을 통해 작가가 제기하려던 문제가 특정한 사회 문제를 다룬 것으로 보기에는 무리가 있다. 「서해무릉기」의 필사자 또는 책주의 면면을 보면 대개 노년의 소일거리로 삼거나 시집가기 전후의 심란함을 달래거나 시집살이의 고단함을 잊으려고 펼치던 작품이라고 할 수 있다. 그렇다면 무겁고 딱딱한 주제여서는 곤란하기 때문이다. 애정소설의 장르적 관습에 충실한 방향으로 이본 변이가 일어난 것도 이런 독자들의 취향에 따른 결과인 셈이다. 따라서 이 작품은 애정소설의 전통 속에서 다뤄야 한다고 생각한다.

“Seohaemureunggi(西海武陵記)” still has lots to reveal. Some of the questions are very important. The type of the work, intention of its author, definition of the spatial background “Seohaemureung island”, etc. have too many speculations and thoughts. From my point of view, this situation has been caused by lack of full review on the different versions and lines, the very basic of research. Until now, this work has been only investigated through two versions; Ewha Womans university version and Kim Gwangsun version. It reveals that three versions of the work exist in Korea University, Sungkyunkwan University and Adanmungo. Other than these, there are also some pieces of the manuscripts stuck behind other books. In this article, it classifies the different editions by order and line while investigating what meaning these variations possess. The versions of Ewha Womans university, Kim Gwangsun and Adanmungo are belong to a category and the other versions of Korea University and Sungkyunkwan University are also included in the other category. The former three versions seem more close to its original and the later two versions were modified later. The later versions search to clarify the cause and effect relationship. By enhancing its narration and emphasizing antagonist’s character, it clearly aims to romance genre stronger than its original text. The differences like this between the versions are closely related with the controversies. In addition, the later variations describe encounter of heroine and hero entirely different. This changes the characteristics of protagonists, way of analysis on scenes, meaning of the background and even category of the work. I also think Kim Gwangsun version is better than the two versions in the category and best version differentiated from later modified versions. Therefore, Kim Gwangsun version should be the foundation of this literature research in the future. In order to understand the direction of the work, the later versions, especially Korea University version should be considered.
