혼성어는 형성에 참여하는 두 단어의 전체 혹은 일부를 이용하여 형성된 단어라고 할 수 있는데, 합성어와 달리 구성요소 중 일부가 삭감된다는 특징이 있다. 이때 혼성어를 형성하는 과정에서 삭감된 형식은 단어가 아닌 의사어근의 지위를 가져 제한된 분포를 보이는 것이 일반적이다. 이러한 혼성어는 결합에 의해 형성될 수도 있고 대치에 의해 형성될 수도 있다. 다만 결합에 의해 형성된 혼성어와 대치에 의해 형성된 혼성어는 단어형성 과정에서 나타나는 의미적인 차이에 따라 서로 변별될 수 있다. 한편 혼성어를 형성하는 결합과정을 혼성이라 했을 때, 혼성은 통합관계에 기반한 단어형성에서 개별적이거나 불규칙한 단어를 형성한다. 그러나 혼성에 의해 형성된 불규칙한 단어는 유추를 통해 규칙적인 단어로 변화할 수 있다.
Blends are words formed by combination of arbitrary parts of existing two words. in that time, reduced constituent formed by blending usually have limited distribution. blends can be formed by addition and also can be formed by replace. but the distinction between blends formed by addition and blends formed by replace could be possible according to semantic difference. blending form a irregular word in syntagmatic word-formation. but irregular word formed by blending could become regular word by analogy.
