‘최치원 이야기’는 많은 소설 이본과 다양한 구비설화 각편으로 전승되고 있다. 지금까지 논의에서 난점은 근현대에 채록된 구비설화가 지금의 형태와 내용을 갖춘 시기를 알 수 없다는 것이었다. 설화가 형성된 시기를 확실히 하고 논의를 풀어가야만 소설이 먼저인지, 설화가 먼저인지를 밝히려는 시도도 성과를 거둘 수 있다. 또 작품의 의미를 해명하려면 과거 향유자들이 어떻게 이해했는가를 살펴보는 것도 중요하다. 이 글에서 비록 단편적인 기록을 통해서일지라도 그걸 검토한 이유다. 기록으로 보면, 대체로 16세기 후반에는 소설이 등장한 게 분명하다. 이어 17세기 초반부터는 이 작품의 내용을 언급한 단편적인 기록이 속속 나왔다. 이런 기록은 특정한 지리적 공간에서 느낀 감회를 읊는 형태가 대부분이었다. 유몽인․신지제․정기안 등의 글은 17세기에 이미 소설 내용이 구비문학화하여 민간은 물론 사대부들 사이에도 퍼져 있었음을 보여준다. 또한 송래희가 남긴 「문창공사적」처럼 소설을 요령껏 압축해 제시한 경우도 있었다. <최고운전> 독자들과 구비전승 향유자들은 최치원이 당나라에 건너가기 전까지의 서사에 관심을 집중했다. 그 중에서도 금돼지와 연결된 신비한 출생과 뛰어난 글솜씨를 얻게 된 과정이 깊은 인상으로 남았다. 그 뒤의 이야기는 대체로 역사서에 오른 내용을 통해 이해했다. 따라서 작품의 주제의식이 무엇인지도 이런 관점에서 다시 생각할 필요가 있다. 이를 테면 중국과의 대외관계를 염두에 두었다는 식의 설명은 나름 타당성이 있지만, 독자들의 주된 관심에서는 벗어나 있었다는 의미기 때문이다.
Stories of “Choi Chi-won” have been handed down through generations in different versions and as oral folktales. In discussing its history, a difficulty is in determining when the folktales that were recorded in the modern and present age had been established. Many years formed the current version of the tale, but the time when the present plot and contents were obtained remains unspecified. This point is important because the time of such formation will answer the question which one came first, the written book or the lore. To explain the meaning of the material, it is also important to understand how the readers in the past saw it as well as analyze in the viewpoint of modern researchers. This study reviews fragmentary records accordingly. The records clarified that a fiction “Choigowoonjeon(崔孤雲傳)” appeared in the late 16th century. From the early 17th century several records mentioned this novel. These documents mostly give sentiments on the historic site and corresponding person. The pieces from Yu Mon-gin, Shin Jee-je, and Jeong Gi-an, and their contemporaries, show that the story had already spread widely to the public in the 17th century. Similar to “Munchanggongsajeok(文昌公事蹟)” written by Song Rae-hee, versions in this period presented an extremely compact form of the novel. In the past, the readers focused on the narration of Choi Chi-won until the point in which he goes over to Tang. Particular impressions were on the tale of his birth and education. The readers loved his mysterious birth that included a golden pig and outstanding ability to learn and write. The protagonist’s life and activities after this period were mainly based on the historical records. Therefore, the subject of the work should be reconsidered. For example, it may seem valid that this tale has relations with China in mind, but such a view is not a main concern of the past readers.
