북한의 방아소리는 논매는소리로 불린 경우가 가장 많으며, 그 외 모심는소리, 보리타작소리, 발방아소리 등으로도 불린다. 4/가 가장 많으며, 신축적인 박이나 변박도 관찰된다. 메나리조가 가장 많고, 그 외 창부타령조, 베틀가조, 오돌또기조, 수심가조가 있다. 북한의 대표적 음조직으로 알려진 수심가조는 단 1곡으로, 음조직적 지역성은 두드러지지 않는다. 전조나 변이를 보이는 곡이 10곡 중 6곡으로, 음조직 간 상호영향이 활발하다. 모두 메기고받는형식이며, 독창으로 부른 경우가 6곡이다. 긴－잦은 소리 등의 연곡 형태는 관찰되지 않았다. 여럿이 메기고 받은 곡 중 메기는소리와 받는소리가 종지구에서 겹치는 곡이 많다. 메기는소리와 받는소리를 대조시키면서, 두 단락의 종지구는 통일시킨 곡이 많다. 종지부에서 받는소리를 확대 변주하여 고조된 제창으로 마무리한 곡도 관찰된다. 동종의 곡이 서로 다른 두 지역의 논매는소리로 불린 경우가 있다. 동일한 유형의 변이를 보이는 동종의 곡이 황남 배천군뿐 아니라 경기도 강화군과 전남 여천군에서도 발견되는데, 이는 사당패의 활동에 의한 결과로 보인다. 북한의 방아소리는 적은 곡수에도 불구하고 다양한 음조직과 선율, 전조기법, 변이, 색다른 구성 등을 보인다.
The most common Banga-sori in North Korea are used as weeding songs, and sometimes as rice planting songs, barley threshing songs, treadmill songs. The most songs are of 4/ time, and some songs have flexible beat or irregular time. Menari-jo is the most common tonal system, and there are also Changbutaryeong-jo, Betlga-jo, Odolttogi-jo and Susimga-jo in the tonal system of Banga-sori in North Korea. Only one Banga-sori is of Susimga-jo that is known as the representative tonal system in North Korea, so the Banga-sori don't show any distinct geographical characteristics in tonal system. The mutual influence is so active that modulation or interaction appeared in six songs of ten. All the Banga-sori in North Korea are responsorial, but six songs are sung as solo. The set songs which are composed of different speed (slow and fast) are not observed. When several persons sing responsorial songs, most of the calling songs overlap with the responding songs. Occasionally calling songs are contrasted with responding songs, but the two phrases of their cadences are generally made similar. In one song the cadence of responding song is extended to make variation, and ended with an excited unison melody. Sometimes the same song is used as an weeding song in two deferent regions. One song which has same interaction is observed in Baecheon-gun of Hwanghaenam-do, Ganghwa-gun of Gyeonggi-do and in Yeocheon-gun of Jeollanam-do. Such phenomenon seems to result from Sadangpae’s activity. Though there are not many Banga-sori in North Korea, they have various tonal systems, melodies, modulations, interactions, and the unusual structures.
