본고는 신라문화 관련 문헌에 나타난 신라개와 신라개 이야기의 문화원형적 특성을 고찰한 논문이다. 경주지역 전래의 토종개 ‘경주개 동경이’는 2012년 문화재청에 의해 천연기념물 제540호로 지정되었고, 이후 경주시 건천읍 용명리 탑골마을은 ‘동경이마을’로 지정되었고, 제3회(2016년) ‘개판 축제’가 이곳에서 개최된 바 있다. 개는 약 14,000년 전부터 인류의 역사와 함께 해온 매우 친근한 동물로서, 우리나라에서도 그 근원은 신석기 시대까지 소급되며, 꼬리가 짧은 경주개 동경이는 5~6세기의 신라고분에서 출토된 토우와 신라 문헌에서도 확인된다. 동경이의 체형은 진돗개와 비슷하지만 꼬리는 사슴처럼 짧은 특징을 가진다. 한국의 개들이 가진 일반적인 이미지는 의견(義犬), 충견(忠犬), 벽사(闢邪)와 아울러 ‘개새끼’의 경우처럼 비속성을 대표하는 말로 쓰이는 이중성을 갖지만, 신라개의 이미지는 더욱 다채롭고 원형적이다. 신라개는 생식기가 아주 큰 지증왕의 왕비를 찾게 하여 왕자를 생산함으로써 신라왕실을 안정시킨 매우 특별한 영물(靈物)이었으며, 또한 서역에서 수입된 큰개[獒]가 진흥왕의 동륜태자를 ‘물어 죽인 사건[獒事]’은 신라왕실의 문란한 성생활과 엽기적인 폐륜행위를 만천하에 알렸다. 이는 사람이 아닌 개가 신라사와 신라왕실사를 뒤흔든 대사건이었다. 아울러 의자왕에게 백제의 망국을 예고한 개는 꼬리가 ‘들사슴처럼 생긴[狀如野鹿, 녹미구(鹿尾狗)] 개’ 즉 경주개 동경이였다. 아울러 사천왕사 벽화 속에 그려진 그림 개가 벽에서 나와 사천왕사의 뜰을 배회하며, 짓는다는 내용은 신라개가 신라망국을 예고한 것이지만, 이런 4차원적이고 환상적인 이야기는 즉 매트릭스의 현실, 가상현실의 이야기로서 콘텐츠화 할 수 있는 매우 재미있는 소재이다. 이런 점을 종합적으로 판단할 때, 신라개는 후대의 개들보다 더욱 다채로운 콘텐츠와 이야기의 원형을 간직하고 있다. 따라서 신라개와 신라개 이야기는 한국의 개 연구에는 물론 ‘동경이 테마파크’, ‘국견박물관 설립’을 위한 이론적 근거가 되고, 아울러 신라문화의 산업적, 문화적, 교육적 활용에 크게 도움 되는 문화자원임을 확인할 수 있었다.

This paper examines the cultural characteristics of Silla Dog and Silla dog stories in the Silla literature. Donggyeong Dog, a local dog in Gyeongju, was designated as a National Monument No. 540 by the Cultural Heritage Administration in 2012. The short-tailed Gyeongju dog, Donggyeong Dog, is also found in the clay dolls from the Silla Mound in the 5th and 6th centuries and Silla literature. The external features of Donggyeong Dog are similar to the Jindo dog, but the tail is as short as the deer. The common images of Korean dogs are strong in righteousness, loyalty, but the images and role of Silla Dog are more diverse. The Silla dog was a very special creature that stabilized the royal family of Silla by producing a prince that allowed to find the queen of the King Ji-jeung Silla dog was a very special creature. According to the records, Silla dog found the queen of King Ji-jeung, whose genitalia are very large, to allowed to produce a price that stabilized the royal family. In addition, the case that the big dog imported from Central Asia bites the King of Jin Heungang's prince and killed him, informed a confused sex life of the royal family of Shilla. The dog that prophesied the collapse of Baekje to King Euija was a dog whose tail was like a deer, Donggyeong Dog. In addition, the story that the drawing of a dog in the murals of Sachunwangsa Temple came out of the wall and predicted the collapse of Silla kingdom is an interesting material that can be processed into the reality of the Matrix and the story of virtual reality. Overall, Silla dog has a very colorful content and a prototype of the story. Therefore, the story of Silla dog and Silla dog will greatly contribute to the research for Korean Dog as well as the basic research the establishment of National Dog museum, and Theme park. It will also contribute to and industrial, cultural and educational utilization of various Silla cultures.
