이 논문은 탄허(呑虛, 1913-1983)의 불교·유교·기독교 삼교의 말세론 분석과향후 백년의 미래를 예견한 그의 미래학을 고찰하는 것을 그 목적으로 한다. 탄허는 불교의 『대집경』에서 언급한 해탈-선정-다문-탑사-투쟁의 오오백세 가운데 현재를 투쟁뇌고(鬪爭牢固)의 말법시대로 규정하고, 『원각경』의 ‘말세에도허망심을 내지 않으면 그대로 보살’이라는 말씀으로 이 시대를 대처하라고 가르쳤다. 유교의 『황극경세서』에서는 황-제-왕-패-이적-금수 가운데 현재는 금수운(禽獸運)의 말세이나, 역학의 변역(變易)과 생생(生生)의 원리에 의거하여 다시 황운(皇運)으로 돌아가게 될 것임을 전망했다. 기독교의 『요한계시록』의 종말론은 불로써 심판한다고 하나 그 내용에 조리와 체계가 없다고 분석한 뒤, 김일부 『정역(正易)』의 ‘이천칠지(二天七地)’의 논리를 활용하여 잠재된 불이 지구의 밑으로 들어가 북극의 빙하를 녹이면서 일어나는 모든 현상과 연관이 있다고 설명했다. 탄허는 말세를 맞아 지축의 변화와 기후의 급변이 일어남에 따라 동양사상을 중심으로 한 초종교 운동이 일어나고 인재난에 시달리는 등 혼란은 있겠으나 ‘말세는 있으나 종말은 없다’는 것이 그의 말세관과 미래학의핵심이었다. 즉, 멸망이 아니라 결실이며 심판이 아니고 성숙이라는 것이다. 탄허는 간방(艮方)인 한국이 장차 세계문명의 중심이 될 것이며, 이를 준비하기 위해서는 국가와도 바꾸지 않을 도의(道義)적인 인재를 양성해야 된다고 설파했다. 그의 역경불사는 이와 같은 낙관적인 미래학을 바탕으로 평생동안 지속된 것으로, 인재양성과 교육불사에 사용하기 위한 교재를 만들기 위한 것이었다. 논자는 이러한 오대산과 계룡산을 오가면서 펼친 탄허의 민족적 불교사상을 ‘간산사상(艮山思想)’이라고 명명하며 탄허사상의 한 중요한 사상적 경향으로 파악하고자 했다.
This study aims to analyze Tanheo Taekseong(呑虛宅成, 1913-1983)’s theory of future generation(末世論) of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Christianity and to examine his Futurology. Seon Master Tanheo defined that now is the era of struggle among five periods of five hundred years(五五百歲) according to The Daji jing(『大集經』, Mahāsaṃnipata-sūtra) of Buddhism. And he said that according to Huang Ji Jing Shi Shu(『皇極經世書』) of Confucianism, today s recognized as the age of birds and beasts(禽獸運), However, he predicted that it would return to the age of Saint(皇運) by the principle of change. According to The Book of Revelation(『約翰啓示錄』) of Christian, the earth s predicted to be judged by fire, but Tanheo analyzed that contents were unsystematic and incoherent. So using the theory of ‘two-heaven and seven『earth(二天七地)’ of the JeongYeok(『正易』), he explained that the meaning of judgment by fire. It explains that the energy of the hidden fires goes to the bottom of the Earth, and that melt Ice in the North Pole. The key to his Viewpoint of future generation(末世觀) is that there is future generation(末世), but there is no apocalyps(終末). And the key to his Futurology is that there is no apocalyps but is fruition, and there is no judgment but is maturity. Tanheo forecasted that if there is a Big Chaos, the transcendental religion movement(超宗敎 運動) will happen and the moral talent will be lacking. And he emphasized that South Korea, called Ganbang(艮方:one of the 24directions), will become the world’s leading nation of civilization in the future. I will call his Ethnic Buddhism as Gansan Thoughts(艮山思想), and I would like to research more about it.
