본고에서는 신라 경덕왕대 개칭된 지명 ‘연기’의 명명 연원을 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 각종 고지도, 지리지, 역사서 등의 역사 자료와 지명 자료 등을 다양한 시각에서 검토하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. (1) 고지도와 지리지를 조사한 결과, 세종시 연기면에 위치한 당산과 당산성의 원 명칭들은 16세기 이전에 이미 잊혔으며, 오늘날의 명칭은 20세기 전후에 명명되었음을 확인하였다. (2) 자연 마을의 지명, 연기 김씨의 관향명, 조선시대의 봉호명을 조사한 결과, 조선 시대 이전에 연기의 이칭으로 ‘연성(燕城), 연주(燕州)’가 존재했고 널리 통용되었음을 확인하였다. (3) 연기의 이칭인 연성, 최근에 이 지역에서 발견된 유적, 『삼국사기』의 기록, 연기 지역의 역사적 위상 등의 관련성을 검토하여, 연기 지역을 백제의 대성팔족(大姓八族) 가운데 한 세력인 연씨(燕氏)들의 근거지로 추정하였다. (4) 신라 경덕왕대 이루어진 지명 개칭 과정에서, 연기 지역에 근거지를 둔 연씨 세력의 성씨를 개칭 지명인 ‘연기’의 전부 요소에 반영한 것으로 판단하였다. 이러한 명명 방법은 신라가 백제인들을 회유하고 위무하던 정책의 일환이었다.
The aim of this paper is to trace an origin of the place name ‘Yeongi’. ‘Duingji’ was the ancient place name in the Baekje Dynasty, it was renamed to ‘Yeongi’ in the Silla Dynasty. For this purpose, we researched the historical documents, cultural materials and various place names in Sejong City. So the results of this study were as follows; (1) The original names of Dangsan(mountain) and Dangshanseong(castle) in Sejong-city were forgotten before the 16th century. (2) Prior to the Joseon Dynasty, there was Yeonseong(Yeon-castle) as another name Yeongi, and it was widely used. (3) Yeongi area was estimated to be the base of Yeon nobles, one of eight great nobles in the Beakje Dynasty. (4) In the process of renaming the Baekje’s place names by the Silla Dynasty, the place name of Yeongi reflects the familly name of the Yeon nobles to the first part of place name.
