본 연구는 심훈이 남긴 단편소설 <찬미가에 싸인 원혼>, <오월비상>, <황공의 최후>, <여우목도리>를 살펴보고, 여기에 드러난 창작방법을 고찰하는 것을 목표로 한다. 흔히 심훈의 작품은 전기적 요소와 관련이 깊다고 하는데, 실제로 그는현실 체험을 바탕으로 소설을 창작하였다. 그중 인상적 경험을 했던 기억을 되살려 소설화한 경우가 보인다. 그는 3․1만세운동 참여로 인해 왜경에 붙잡혀 옥살이를 하였는데, 소설 <찬미가에 싸인 원혼>과 편지글 <어머님께>는 옥에서의 경험을 바탕으로 한 것이다. 그리고 <오월비상>은 ‘유다’ 라는 인물과 관련된 작품으로, 중국 유학 시절의 ‘유다’를 언급한 수필도함께 전하고 있다. 이뿐만 아니라 주변의 일상을 포착하여 소설화한 작품도 보인다. 심훈이 쓴 <황공의 최후>는 자신이 기르던 개와 관련된 <사지의 일생>이란 수필을 소설로 개작한 것이다. 또 <여우목도리>는 당시의 여우목도리 유행과관련하여 쓴 콩트 형식의 짧은 작품이다. 심훈이 단편소설을 창작한 방법의 특징은 크게 두 가지로 볼 수 있는데, 우선은 체험적 리얼리티의 강화를 들 수 있다. 이를 위해 심훈은 작자와서술자 간의 거리를 가깝게 하였고, 자신과 직접적으로 관계있는 주변인물을 소설의 모델로 활용하였다. 또 하나는 동질적 관계가 외압에 의해 파탄되는 과정을 그리면서 울분의 미학을 표출하였던 점을 들 수 있다. 이렇듯 심훈은 가깝고 쉬운 데서 소재를 찾고 그것을 보편적 경험으로 확대시켜 당시의 시대상과 문제의식까지 담아내었다. 이는 심훈이 예술 전반에서 활동하며 추구했던, 대중이 작품을 통해 오락과 위안을 얻게 하는한편 문제의식도 느끼게 해야 한다는 그의 대중지향적 예술관에서 비롯된것이다.

The purpose of this paper is to review Shim Hoon's short novels, <A Vengeful spirit surrounded a hymn>, <Bitterness of Woman(falling frost in May)>, <The Last of Sir Hwang>, <Fox-Fur Muffler>, and to clarify the creation method of them. People usually say there are a lot of biographical elements in Shim Hoon's works. Actually, he created works based on real experiences. He was put in prison because of participating in March First Independence Movement, and the letter which he wrote in prison, <Dear Mother>, has passed. And he wrote a <A Vengeful spirit surrounded a hymn> that was based on this experience. Also he wrote a <Bitterness of Woman(falling frost in May)>. There was a woman called “Ryuda" in story. Shim Hoon mentioned in his essay that he met Ryuda during his study in China. He wrote works which were caught his daily life as well as his experiences. <The Last of Sir Hwang> was adapted from his essay <the Life of Saji>. And <Fox Fur Muffler> was a very short story like a conte, this story was related to the fashion for a fox-fur muffler at the time. There are two ways in the features of the creation methods of short novels. One is to invigorate reality by experience. For the purpose, there is a close affinity between the author and the narrator. And Shim Hoon used someone related to him as models of his works. The other is to express the aesthetic of resentment by describing the breakdown of relationship because of external pressure. As a result, he had attempted that his personal experiences were allowed to extend to universal experience. He had tried to put a sign of the times and critical mind in his works. It results from his pop-oriented view of art which he had pursued in his life. He always thought art had to give the mass a critical mind as well as a pleasure and a comfort.
